    1999 225 johnson low rpms

I have an issue with my 2000 225 johnson. I am only able to turn 5000 rpms. Its on a 99 javelin r20. The engine was built approx 3 yrs ago, and I had the jack 6 inch jackplate put on it then. Engine is setting 3.5 inches below pad and running a 25 tempest per todd morgan. No matter what prop I run in the 25 or 26 pitch, 5000 rpms is the best I see. I replaced the vro/fuel pump, new plugs, roller on throttle. I have checked that all the carbs are opening up all the way. It runs like a champ but want break 5000. I have done a leak down and compression check with almost perfect results. Every once in a while, when I press the gas comming out of the hole it will have a slight stumble but picks up and goes. I notice no miss at all. I have ran seafoam through the last 5 tanks of gas. What am I missing? I also put a timming light on each cyclinder going across the lake to see if maybe I am dropping spark. My problem is that the timming light cuts off on all the cyclinders over 3500 rpms. I even tried another gun. What am I missing? Thanks in advance.

I have the same motor you have.......

Has the lower unit been changed? I had the same problem after a lower unit swap..... I changed to "another" lower unit and "bam" back in business but not as good as the one I popped.......... If its not the lower and you find out your problem, if you dont mind shooting me an email with what fixed it? Thanks, prez@bassingaround.com

No, I have not changed the lower unit. I change the fluid on a regular basis. I have heard of alot of people changing lower units and end up with this issue, but mine is still factory as far as I know of. Thanks for the reply and I will make sure to get back with you when I get it fixed.

Raise your jack plate up about a quarter of and inch ,go try it out ,watch your water pressure keep it 20 psi or higher .
Then move the plate up maybe a eight or 3/16 next time if you need a little more , Keep working with it little at a time rpms will come up
    ,BUT MUST WATCH WATER PRESSURE,
    OR POP GO MOTOR
My 1999 J225 HPLEEN IS ABOUT 1.5 to 2 BELOW THE PAD / With a 25 Bass Renagade 4 blade prop ,Mine would only turn 5000 till I adjusted plate up
I;m turnning around 5700 rpm and about 30ish water pressue now ,I can get more rpms, but I have to watch my water pressure more closely at different speeds , so I just left it where it's at, best for over all water pressure and don't have to watch it as close

I went all the way from 5 inches below the pad too 2 inches below the pad. My setting as is it now gives me the most speed with out loosing lift and water pressure. I think its a motor issue more then a set up issue cause there no since I cant turn these props at this engine height. Also the timming light going out has me stumped. Thanks

Many times the rebuilder will retard the WOT timing to prevent blowing up their work. They want you to come back and recheck the motor and torque values on the heads. If your timing light is an iductive type with an adjustable dwell setting set it at the WOT timing range and re-try it. To set you idle timing make sure you have back pressure on the motor and set your light for the manual's setting then shoot #1.
