    Need Everyone's Opinion

Say you set up an open tournament (one time deal, not a trail tournamnet) and have people that pre-paid their entry fees and then the weather got bad (cold, snow/rain), but not bad enough to call the tournament off. Then you had people calling to tell you they had changed their minds and were not going to fish due to weather, do you refund the money to those that dont show up, or just put it toward the payout for the people that do show up and fish?

I just need to know the right way to go about this....thanks in advance guys

As long as the conditions are safe. If its just bad weather they need to man up and go or forfeit there entry fee.

If the tournament is a go then they get no money back. Those other people signed up based on a guaranteed pot so it would be even more unfair to them to not have them pay.

I agree with joe, as long as the weather is not so bad you can't get to the lake. I pulled my boat to Dale Hollow last year with snow on 2 lanes of 65.

As long as boating conditions are safe I would have to say man up or put up, now blast away

I say always tick to the original date and time, unless unsafe conditions. Changing things in mid stream causes problem in my opinion. Jeff

From what that just said on the news, it could only be a dusting or just rain, or maybe a couple of inches. Who knows this is Kentucky. Lets go fishin

Senior Belski said up to 4 inches from about Salem down to E-town going in a northeast direction so it should clip Nolin if he's right.

I think I know what tournament you are referring to and if I am correct it is a charity fund raiser...with that being said I would take into account that not returning somebodies money will get you bad exposure whether you like it or not. I am not going to say anybody is right or wrong but bad word of mouth will kill the turnout if you plan on having this event again in the future.

Me personally I would just stay at home if the weather was bad and donate my money to charity...but sadly most people who enter fundraiser tournaments are not there to support a cause. They are seeking money back on their entry fee. At best it is a double edge sword...you will get cut on both sides

    Re: Need Everyone's Opinion (mastin03)

Tournament Director makes the call...if the tournament is a go then no money back...otherwise you get into the deal where in any tournament where people prepay you would have to refund entry fees because of other excuses like.."I got called in to work"..."my wife is sick"..."I don't feel good"...."my boat is broke"...etc...

On the other side of the coin...I have seen a lot of tournament directors go ahead with tournaments that should have been cancelled. Safety should be the issue here...if it is not reasonably safe for people to travel or be on the water the day of the tournament it should be cancelled. Would like to have a dollar for every tournament I have seen here on Ky/Barkley that decided to go ahead and do it when the wind was blowing 25 + miles and hour and big rollers. No tournament is worth risking peoples life or property just to make a buck.

    Need Everyone's Opinion (mastin03)

Do you all think that tomorrow afternoon would be too late to call this if we give everyone a call who has signed up? What about walk ups the day of? All we can do is post on fishing boards and try to get the word out. I would just hate for the weather to break and not do what they are expecting and have 10 boats who show up Saturday morning looking for the tournament, BUT people's safety is number 1 here. What about a reschedule...set a date but then people who have signed up can't make it and want a refund...? Damn weather, why can't it just cooperate.

    Re: Need Everyone's Opinion (EJHick)

    Eric,

If we get 3 to 5" of snow here in Louisville they will get the roads cleared. The problem I see is the road between I-65 and Wax, if they get 3 to 5" of snow down there they will not have those roads cleared by 4am Sat. and some of those roads are curvie, and hillie. I know it is a big IF, but it is looking more like we are going to get snow. Just make the call tomorrow evening, yes you will need to call everyone that pre-paided, set a date to re-schedule the tournament and ask everyone as you call if they can make it on that date. If not then you should refund the money, unless they are going to just help out the L-Raisin' Anglers with a donation. It will all work out, we can fish another day.
