I will be going to fish Lake Barkley the first week of April for vacation. We normally go to Nolin, but want to give the big lakes a try. Which end of the lake is better this time of year?? What type of pattern and lures should we try??

Jim: I like to fish the north and middle parts of Barkley in early April myself. You should have some jerkbait fish on main lake points, some fish on secondary creek channel points and banks on crankbaits, jigs, Texas rigs and some shallow fish on the right days on lipless crankbaits. Be careful as the lake normally is only a foot or so above winter pool that week and Barkley can eat your boat if you run in places outside the navigation bouys that you don't know. If you stay on the north end you can have access to Ky Lake also thru the canal near the dams and the week you are going to be here can be exceptionally good for Smallmouth on Ky Lake.
Dave
I am going to be making my move down there over the next 2 weeks so I will let you know what I find. With my current situation I will probably be on Barkley 3-4 times a week starting March 9th.

Which means as of the first of March I will be living near Hopkinsville. I have actually made plans to secure a spot for the year at Prizer Point on lake Barkley to stay in my travel trailer.
I hate big changes it just stresses me out with all the unknowns! At least I will be on the lake to relieve the stress. The only downside is my wife will still be here in Nicholasville at least until Spring of 2008 for school.

Although I haven't used it much, I've only caught a couple fish on a jerkbait in my life. I remember Rick Clunn caught a boatload on KY Lake 10-15 years ago. I probably need to put down my jig and try out a Rogue or Husky J.
I have caught numbers of fish on rattletrap type baits in April, just no big ones.
I fish South, but gas prices my change my way of thinking.

It was the week before Easter 1994. I watched him throw a modified to suspend firetiger thunderstick. He had a 32lb. limit of smallmouth.Same day Mark Menendez had 4 largemouth on a rouge that weighed 28lbs.

Yeh Dave I got a job working at the same place Heffer11 works at. Will be getting a house in Cadiz near the lake hopefully in the fall. In the meantime I will be living out of my travel trailer at Prizer Point Campground on Barkley.

It sounds to me like I should get some suspending jerkbaits. Any ideas on what colors or manufacturer works the best? Will post results of trip when I return.
Welcome to the neighborhood Billy. Your gonna like it down here...![]()
Jim - The rattline rogues are great but the paint only last on them about a year to 2 years. However they have extremely sharp hooks!!
I suggest Orange bottom, White Bottom, and silver Bottom since thats all the fish ever really sees of them. Then I get the same in suspending and floating.

I guess I'll never know how long the paint lasts, since I fish Patoka.Never have a lure long enough to see how long the paint lasts.
