    Clean up trailer spindle

I had a hub go out and now in process of putting new one on. The spindle has some hardened black sludge on it and it needs to be removed. What is the best method to remove this and other buildup to get the spindle smooth so bearings fit properly? Sand paper, file???
    Thanks,
    Dave

Emery cloth works best but can get clogged quick. You can get a 3M buffer pad kit at most auto parts stores and use that with a drill and it'll take it off and won't hurt hardened surfaces.

Diesel fuel and a rag. Let it soak.

    Gasket remover works well too.
