    Etec 225 ho

A couple of weeks ago it seemed to have ran out of gas, at which there was plenty in both tank. My technician put it on the computer and all checked fine, but notice the low pressure fuel pump had no pressure at all. He replaced it and the fuel line from the pressure bulb and it ran good the next trip out. But yesterday it did the same thing, it will run fir a few seconds and then run out of gas. I am at my wits end over this and need some help please.

Your tech should use a vacuum gauge and a clear piece of fuel line to check and test the boat's fuel system for restrictions or air bubbles. Vapor locking could also describe your symptoms.

If you have twin tanks and a selector valve, inspect that carefully and make sure the switch is fully open for the chosesn tank. Very common problem on Rangers.

Chance, Seahorse is the "man" here on this board. Championman is great to. Good luck fishing.

    Ranger man,

Seahorse is as always quite correct.....

If you are running a Z with twin fuel tanks and the tank selector valves, beware of the valve selector. Ranger made a run of them years ago that are now failing when the shaft slips and the valve is OFF even though the pointer shows it to be on. You may have 1st damaged the etec low pressure pump running it Closed and now after getting some fuel in the line are again still starving the fuel line unknowingly. I had to install a fuel vacuum gauge to run my Z.

Actually, Ranger doesn't make the selector switch. They buy their components. Your BRP dealer has a tool to monitor your fuel flow. It needs to be tested by the dealer.

    Re: Etec 225 ho (ChampioNman)

i have a 2007 z21 w/225h/o which is on third power head my dealer found it to be a bad fuel selector switch from Ranger as that is who I bought boat from.I had to get reman powerhead as i am on 4th year of 7 year warranty and aftermarket warranty would only pay for reman,I am going to ask Ranger for a New complete [powerhead as i only have 137 hrs on boat motors total and don't feel as though I should have to settle for reman powerhead as it was caused from defective part which they new about and didn't have a recall on.Clear plastic hose on fuel line showed the problem. The stem plastic seat material slid down stem on selector switch.

Re: Etec 225 ho (Bob G)

Many of us have been suspecting Ranger's valve selector switches may be responsible for many blown motors as when Ranger corrected their valve problem, the blown power head reports seem to have diminished as well.

I understand Ranger did have a RECALL of sorts on their bad valve selectors. At least it was a quiet RECALL known by many dealers requesting he valves to prevent customers from having problems, but apparently it was never disclosed to the end Ranger customers/ Calls to Ranger recently now deny there was ever an official RECALL.

Good luck with your repairs and let us know what if anything Ranger does for you about the engine problems the valve failure caused.

Dealers have a hard time finding the bad valve and often just are not helpful finding this failure as it is very intermittant. An installed fuel vacuum gauge such as below installed on the fuel line from the Ranger valve runs less than $100 and reliably identifies this failure as the gauge has a tell-tale marker sweep indicator showing/recording the highest vacuum which should always be less than about 4.

Lou,where would I install this vacuum guage? Did you just cut tee into fuel line after valve before bulb or just before where fuel line enters motor?

    Thanks Bob

Re: Etec 225 ho (Bob G)

You can simply tee in the fuel line between the tank selector valve and the squeeze Primer bulb. Do NOT put it in the line between the bulb and the motor as the vacuum gauge should not be subjected to any (+) pressure ....only (-) or vacuum. Be sure to use at least 3/8" fitting.

I had already also installed a RACOR-660 10-ucron fuel filter/water seperator and it has an extra port on the output side of the filter allowing ithe gauge to be (T'ed) into the fuel line easily. The gauge now can not only tells me when I have an unwanted restriction in the fuel line/valve selector, it also monitors any clogging of my fuel filter telling me in advance when I might need to consider changing it out.
