Last fall I had a gearcase go out. The actual external part of the gearcase looked good, so I grabbed it from the mechanic. Is this worth trying to have the guts put back into it and keeping for a spare? Is it worth anything to anyone?

Housings are very unpredictable after they are used and go thru a couple of "wars". The best way to evaluate a housing is to check it with the factory alignment tool, and see where you are. You could always eyeball it and look for any obvious signs of destruction that may render it useless. Be especially careful in the pinion bearing area. This needs to be smooth with no signs of scarring or gouging. Check the area where the large "O" ring at the rear bearing carrier is located with some inside micrometers for an out of round condition. This will help you make a decision toward a rebuild.![]()
