    Adding an axle

Thinking of converting my single axle to a tandem trailer. I was wondering what is needed and involved in doing this modification?

I tow my boat very long distants and I don't want to have to shell out 4500 dollars for a new tandem.

Thanks in advance for your help.

That depends if you have the typical bassboat trailer, if it has the built in fenders, and has been made for a single axle it could be a big procedure, cause you will probably have to move that axle to get the balance right.

If you had a trailer like a lot of runabouts with two galvanized or aluminum rails with an axle bolted on then it would be easy to slide that axle a little and add another axle I think you used to be able to get them for like 5-600 with everything.

your best bet might be to look for a used tandem trailer that will work. There probably isn't a lot of them in your size though so I dunno.

    Re: Adding an axle (LookOutForShoals)

Thanks for the response. It shouldn't be to much of a hassle, plus my trailer is a little off balanced anyway. Too much weight in the front.

    What does your boat weigh?

Re: Adding an axle (Lyn O. Dyer)

I have a 188 Champion, on the website it has a listed weight of 1800 pounds pre-rigged.
The reason I am looking to go to a tandam is my current trailer with the set up I have now is wearing out the outer edge of my tires. I am on my 3rd set since 03. I have had it checked out by an auto alignment place, semi-truck place, and a boat dealer. Everyone says it is aligned good. They have told me that it could be a preloaded axle and my boat may not weigh what the preload is.

I also do alot of trailering a year, probably around 10K miles a year. Any info would be helpful.

This is correct, most axles are bulit with 1- 1 1/2 degree of positive camber, so when the boat is on it, it bends the beam into proper camber. This is why the tires are wearing on the outside. some alignment/frame/body shops can bend your beam to the proper camber. I think adding a second axle would cause more problems. Your weight is fine for the single axle. ..
