For ChampioNman

I just purchased a 1999 Evinrude 175, model#E175FPLEEC. It has the pinned heads and has 120lbs. on all 6 cylinders. The dealer stated that it has received all of the updates recommended by Evinrude. Do you know of any issues with this particular motor? Thanks..

    Re: For ChampioNman (THE WITCHDOCTOR)

So is this a bad year or motor? I had to do something because I was getting too attached to the 200 I was running. If my boat was rated for a 200, we wouldn't be having this discussion. Is there anything in particular I should watch for? If I'm not happy with it, the dealer said I could return it for a full refund.. Luckily, he sells Mercs too.

See if you can swap it out for a carb version or a FICHT that is 2002 or newer.

    Re: For ChampioNman (SEAHORSE)

Gas just hit $4.10 a gallon here. The last thing I want is carbs again. They don't have anything 2002 or newer for less than $5k. I'd rather put that much into a newer boat. And I refuse to put an Etec on my boat with everything the local Johnson/Evinrude dealer keeps saying. What is the bad stuff about this motor?

    Re: For ChampioNman (WVBassman)

E-TEC is not a troublesome motor. Lots of misinformation and some downright lies getting spread on in the internet and with "boat ramp banter".Sometime's trolls or mystery-folks try to spread their misinformation on this website but we usually catch it very quickly.

E-TEC is a high tech motor and if a boat rigger doesn't do his or her job properly, then the motor may not run right and the customer blames the motor. Most of the time the dealer never propped it right. If he then has a trained dealer straighten out the rigging, then the customer is super happy and brags about it.

All outboard companies have problem engines whether they admit it or not, and both Merc and Yamaha have PR problems with some of their products too.

    Re: For ChampioNman (SEAHORSE)

Like the topic says, the question is for ChampioNman.. That being said, if I wanted everyone's opinions, I would have titled it "For Everyone." Just asking about this motor, I didn't want to hear the gospel according to Seahorse.. But if you'd like me to go off on a tangent, then fine.. Yes, IMHO, I do think that Mercury is a finer product than Evinrude and Johnson. I had much better luck and performance with my last boat which had a Mercury on it. The last 13 years have been quite hard on the Execs and stockholders of OMC, OMG, BRP.. Not exactly the Fortune 500 company that everyone expected them to be.. How many recalls has Mercury, Yamaha, or Honda had? Not nearly as many.. Are we done now? You showed me your sarcasm, now I'm showing you mine.. What's next? We unzip our pants and get out the measuring tape?? I simply directed my question to ChampioNman.. Not you..

I would get the refund and use that money towards the purchase of a new 175 Pro XS. The fichts have no resale value whatsoever. With the Pro XS you will have warranty and excellent fuel mileage, plus you won't be hanging around here anymore insulting the help.

That was brutal and totally uneccessary...all the guys on here are really helpful and honest...maybe you should try using an IM or buy a Merc so we don't have to see this crap on here anymore. You were wrong and over reacted.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I usually stay out of the middle of pissing matches but, these guys don't get paid for there advice and are a wealth of knowledge. As a matter of fact all of the BBC forums have great people giving very helpful advice. Insulting someone like Seahorse or anyone else is totally uncalled for. Maybe you should take up a new hobby, like skate boarding!!!!

Re: For ChampioNman (Jim R)

I asked legitimate questions, directed specifically to ChampioNman, because I trusted his opinion based on our last "conversation." But instead of receiving legitimate answers, I got seahorse's sarcasm, or personal opinion, of the motor I purchased. He could have typed something more useful than "keep your fingers crossed" or "swap it for another motor." It didn't have to come to that. Yes, I did go postal, but it wasn't right for him to disrespect me or the motor I purchased for no apparent reason and not expect to hear something back from me. I know it says "proffessional smartass" under his name, but he doesn't have to live up to it to total strangers. I just wanted to know if there was anything in particular to watch with this motor.

    Re: For ChampioNman (WVBassman)

The apparent reason for disrespecting the motor was its past and unreliability. It was legitimate advise to sell/trade/donate/walk away/ or just keep fingers crossed.

Im not saying anything about the postal thing, because sometimes its hard to accept the purchase was a bad one. Id personally find ANY other motor and put it on, even if it meant a carbed motor. Gas is pretty cheap compared to the repairs that motor will likely - not definitly, but likely require in its life. I personally prefer the carbed motors, because i save money in the long run by doing my repair work myself - i cant do that with these new technology motors.

    Re: For ChampioNman (JoshKeller)

Well we'll see. It was shipped yesterday and is scheduled to arrive at my residence Friday. I've already purchased the adapter kit for hooking it up to my existing wiring and installing the system check gauge. If I get to run it on the water Saturday and it's not satisfactory, I'll send it back for my refund. I at least have to give it a chance seeing as how it has received all of the Evinrude updates. I've been reading on some other forums about individuals that had the same motor with the updates, and were very happy with them. I'm looking at buying the Evinrude software so I can hook it up to my laptop and get all of the info on it.

    Re: For ChampioNman (WVBassman)

If it is a honey you will love it.The pinned heads make a bunch of diff. But by then the damage was done. OMC over bought companies not un=familiar with Irwin Jacobs. It was just a miss timed buying/spending issue, combined with a economy sag like we are in now. Brunswick Marine, Yamaha Marine, etc. BTW Yamaha had close to 20 lawsuits between OMC and Merc for pattent infrigement and won 4. Merc's Opti-max when it first came to life called for a customer class law suit against Brunswick/Merc. They weren't called Opti=Pop for now reason. We don't bash other brands here unless provoked.

I love this you post a question about a motor you just bought because your gut was telling you, you made a mistake and when someone confirms your after thought you blow up on him. If you didn't have any worries you never would have asked.
You better hope the motor has better temperament than you or the only motor you'll be running is the trollin motor good Luck

    Re: For ChampioNman (Scotty B)

I usually don't reply to posts on here but I will agree that your rant towards Seahorse was out of line....The Evinrude software won't be of much use to you without the factory training to use it..... All outboard parts are expensive but the parts for the engine you bought are VERY expensive.... Also keep in mind that engine has O trade in / resale value..... Hope it works out for you but keep in mind the 98 /99 model 150 /175 is a ticking time bomb..... Good Luck

    Re: For ChampioNman (donwb46)

I didn't post the question due to a gut feeling.. I just wanted to know if there was any issues in particular I might watch for. Or any certain parts that I might want to replace prior to starting it. I'm not really concerned about the resale value at this time because I'm putting it on a 93 model boat. Not much resale value already. Although I have done a good bit to it to improve its cosmetic appearance, and hopefully improve its performance over the 150 I recently removed, it is an 18 year old boat and most fishermen want the latest, greatest, newest thing on the market.. I extend my most sincere apologies to SEAHORSE and the rest of you.. I did take his remarks pretty serious, considering I haven't received or run the motor yet. All I can do is hope that it runs well and lasts a few years.

WVB -- I sugesst you leave Seahorse along. He (and others like ChampionMan, etc,) is the hand that feeds us Evinrude owners. I have read his answers many years and he will not steer you wrong. I suggest you take his free advise.
