Seahorse,in photo #2,it looks like he is running a whales tail on that e-tec.
Did somebody wake the sleeping dog!!I hope this is true. From what I have seen about BRP, when they jump in, they jump in with both feet.
You can run, but you can't hide.

Sorry to say but i do not believe they will get involved with racing. They are the first to admit that if you want the fastest outboard purchase a Black Outboard. If you want the quietest purchase a Honda but if you want DQR durabilty, quality, relabilty then purchase a etec.
Can't argue with that johnrude....![]()
Those are the only reasons I stick with Evinrude. I hate the merc sounds and Honda is too heavy and yammies well theyre ok I guess, but still can't beat a Rude!!!!

Now I hate to say it, but NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING sounds like a merc at full song. If you don't like that, somethings wrong with you.
Especially a Racing Merc engine.![]()

Then you haven't heard an F1 V8 or a crossflow with an even-fire crank! Or a high compression looper pushing 380 ponies. No merc sounds as good as any of these!
Except for the V8 F1 program, OMC didn't really support its racers so few people have actually seen what a true OMC race motor is capable of. In the 24 hours of rouen, the privateer johnyrudes always seem to shine and leave most of the factory merc team in the wake.
Within a few years the E-tecs will be at the front and merc will be crying! Even if BRP doesn't support racing the privateers will make the etec sing! It is just that much better a design than the merc.![]()
I don't like to get in the middle of these little spats but I will have to see that to believe that. I really don't care who likes what and all that, the bottom line was written a couple of post up. Mercury=faster, OMC=durability. Now I don't doubt that there will be a few folks who will figure out how to tune the rudes but the Merc guys will be doing the same.
Craig, There are two Merc forums on the BBC.![]()
The Evinrude 3.3 blocks are already being used in the drag circuits with good results. These are the ficht blocks that have been changed over to efi or carbs.
In the unlimited classes the johnyrudes are just about unbeatable!
I will also add that some santioning racing organzations tilt the rules in mercs favor. In one of the near stock classes the merc 280 is given a 50 lbs. wieght advantage over a STOCK LOOPER 225. Does that sound fair to you. There is no way a motor puting out 245 at the prop on a 1450 pound boat can compete with a 1400 pound boat with 280 hp on it.
Not sure I understand the 50# thing you are talking about but to sayI agree or not, would have to know more. I am a believer in run what you brung and hope you brung enough. I don't like any rules that favors one brand or another. The rules should be simple to keep good sportsmanship, not tilt the wheel in any one direction. So the bottom line for me is, if you put the time and the effort to get yours screamin and beat me, good for you. But I will tell you that I don't believe the rudes will beat the mercs stock for stock. I hear all the hype and I like to read all of what is said on all the boards. I have friends that hate mercury and some that hate rudes. I just buy what I like and run it. I am not a racer, I am a bass fisherman who likes to have a decent running bass boat. I don't take my tackle out and troller off to impress folks. I have a stroker with a 250xs that runs pretty damn good. My buddy has an allison with the johnnyrude that screams. He likes them. Anyways, pleasure chatting with you.
I was refering to santioned race events, Not stock motors. As far as stock motors go the Merc may be a bit faster than the Rude on very light boats but the Rude may be faster on a heavier boat. It all pans out in the end. As far as which has the most potential then it goes to the Rude. Bigger block, longer stroke, much better pistons and the E-tec technology. We have to face the facts that the efi's and carb motors are not going to be around much longer. Even in true racing I think.
BRP gave Merc a wake up call with the E-Tec. Merc was ready to do away with 2 strokes entirely until the Rudes started selling so well. Merc cannot just ignore such a large segment of the market (bass boats) and expect to survive. All this is good for all of us as it will bring out the best in all the companies making outboards.
padura, if you ever get down this way I'll show you what some ancient johnyrude technology can do! My 1983 crossflow puts out near 300 ponies and sounds so sweet it makes you wanna cry!!!!
I would love to hear that thing. 300 ponies, man what did you do to that thing?
My motor started life as a factory race motor. It was ported by OMC engineers. The motor cold seized on breakin and they put 2 sleeves in it and kept it as a back up motor. I had BL even out the porting on it and stuff the intake. It has an even fire crank and lightened pistons. It pushed my Bullet xrd 83 mph with 4 feet of wetted surface and negitive trim. This was right before I blew it up! It is being rebuilt again. I ran street gas in it when it needed race fuel. I will take you for a ride in it when it is finished right after Rusty and Championman finish their ride!![]()
I got dibbs on tha forth ride!!!!![]()
