i have a 2004 evinrude 225 di when i put it in reverse it sounds like it is not enguaged all the way. it is real bad when cold and when the motor is trimed up. as the motor warms up its not as bad. the motor runs fine in foward. could this be a cable adjustment or something bad. any help would be great.thanks
Mine did this (95 225 Venom), Here is what fixed mine.......
Pull the prop off, look inside the lower unit housing and find the prop shaft housing tabs which hold the prop housing seated, they are held in by 3/8 bolts, one at top and one on bottom.
If the tabs are loose or wallered out the prop shaft housing will slip back when placed in reverse. This lets the clutch dogs come disengaged and make a hell of a racket.
My prop shaft housing had slipped back bout 3/8 inch, I made some shims toplce under the tabs that will allow the prop housing to be held in better.
the prop end play should be round 0.080 inch
This could be an adjustment issue or could be the clutch dog is worn and/or the engagement dogs on the gear are also worn. The rear bearing carrier could be moving back on you as stated above, however, if this has happened, you need to find out what forced it back. Water in the case will freeze and cause this. You might want to check your fluid for contamination.
