    spark output test

I have tried to check the spark output with all plugs removed and fully charged battery. On my neighbors 1998 J200STELEC Using an adjustible tester from an auto parts store we got very erractic results then it started givining uniform results. Moved it to my engine (same model) I got erractic results on 2 cyclinders and none on the others.

Now my engine starts and runs smooth above 1000 RPM. Only trouble is getting it to idle for an extended period of time without fouling the plugs.

Now it is hard to believe that I have a spark problem or am I wrong? I think it is a problem with the tester or procedure used in testing is this possible?

We both have installed Champion QL78yc plugs gapped to .030, checked the carb sync, checked timing 2 ATDC @ 1000 RPM, checked the compression (mine only 2lbs differance in bank averages, 98 and 100 total variance 95-102) decarbed, running fresh fuel and allowed engine to reach operating temp(very warm to hot to the touch) My next check is as championman suggested - the external recirculation system. where is the inline check valve and the crankcase valve located? I have found the cylinder valves.
    Thanks,

    Re: spark output test (Dub3)

Below every leaf valve there is a check valve on the intake manifold that drains of excess fuel from that cylinder. Each valve has a tiny hose attatched. The check valves screw into the intake manifold and have 5/16" hex bodies. Remove each check valve and make sure each let air pass one way only. They should let no air pass in one direction, and light pressure to flow the other direction. About 5-8 psi will do it. I just use the "lung" pressure tank to test them. There will be at least one more on the front of the block assembly, usually gray color that passes fuel/ oil from the bottom of the block to the upper main bearing area. The same goes for this check valve, one way only. If the valves are sticking, soak them in engine tuner for about an hour then see if they are clean. Recheck to see if they work. If they still do not work, replace the bad ones. Check the new ones before installation to make sure they work properly so you don't have to do it again. As far as the spark goes on you engine. A good hot spark should be visible on all cylinders after the first revolution of the flywheel. If spark is erratic, then further testing is needed on the ignition system.
