    Fuel Restriction ?

1991 150 HP Evinrude Intruder (GLEIS). On vacation in Ohio last week, motor seemed to be coughing a little after idling for a couple of minutes, the intermittent alarm started. I shut it down. Waited a while, tried starting again - and it wont turn over. Primed the bulb and it then started - but eventually alarm went off and then stalled again. It's not sucking the bulb flat, but I believe it does loose it's pressure. From everything I've read here on the boards, its sounds like a fuel restriction issue. I assume I should start with the primer bulb and look at replacing that first ? Or is there something else I should be looking at ? Wont be able to work on it today - maybe tomorrow ?? Thanks for any advice.

    Dave,
Fuel restriction alarm usually kicks in around 4,000 RPM and is a steady tone with no drop into SLOW mode. If you back off the RPM the alarm should go away. Check the level in your oil tank, give the primer bulb on the oil tank a squeeze or two to make sure it is firm.

I filled oil tank before leaving home. I can't remember, but I do believe I did check to see that the oil primer bulb was firm after having the alarm sound off on the first day. Would lack of oil cause the engine to sputter and shut down ? I would think it would just blow up or overheat. Unless it's designed to do that before you blow the engine ??

OK - lets eliminate low oil since the resevoir is full. As far as overheating, temp guage never indicated an increase (stayed around 100 degrees throughout good pee stream as well). That leaves us fuel restriction and no oil. OK Fred, where do I go from here ?? I'll probably get to go out and tinker tomorrow.

Just like before Dave disconnect the Tan wires. They are the alarms senders. Fire up the motor and disconnect the VRO harness, the oil tank harness, the Thermos and the the Vacuum switch just above the fuel intake behind the air box. Hook them up one at a time and figure out why you have an offending alarm.

I had that problem with a 461 VS Ranger a few years ago, ended up being a restriction betwen the engine and gas tank. Engine finally blew and the dealer finally found the problem.

    Re: Fuel Restriction ? (dlewis10)

Bear with me Fred, I think I found all four tan sensor wires. As for the harnesses and Thermostat & vacuum switches I'm a little clueless. I know this is asking a lot, but is there any way to post or e-mail me some pics of what i should be looking for.

Second, I'm trying to get your method right.

    1. Disconnect the four tan alarm sender wires.
    2. Start engine.
    3. Disconnect all harnesses and switches while engine is running.
    4. Reconnect each alarm sender and its accompanying harness/switch one at a time to see which is giving the alarm while engine is running.

I hope that is what you meant. I understand your logic as to see which of the four areas the alarm is coming from. With the engine stalling soon after firing it, will this method work ?? And if indeed it's not getting oil, is it safe to run it while troubleshooting ??

Sorry for all the questions; I almost convinced myself to call an Evinrude dealer eariler today and schedule an appointment, but fear the $$$ that it will cost me .

I'm not sure if you ever came across him on the boards or not, but I may ask Joe Galada to help me through this. He lives 15 minutes from me. He has a 175 Jonny similar to age of my Rude.

Yep Dave that is what I meant. Back side of the motor on the heads you will see wires coming out of each head. The tan wires are the overtemp sensor. Disconnect the bullet connectors. On the port side of the motor probably laying in the belly pan there will be a coil of wire. That is the harness from the oil tank. The ground wire should be connected to the stater and the tan wire will be next to it.
Next step you will need to take the cover off the carbs, unhook the 4 wire harness for the VRO and just slightly up and to the left you will see the vacuum switch. It has two wires on it tan and black for ground. Unhook that tan wire. Prime up the bulb and start the motor on the muffs. Connect one tan wire or harness at a time. Yep Joe should be able to help you out!
