Just dumped $500 into a new trim motor and heat sensor .... mechanic lets me know today 2 of the carb bowls are warped and leaking gas. They say its going to be $113 for 6 bowls and $113 for the kits. Then 5 hours labor .... looking at another $500 + for carb overhauls. Is this something I can do myself ? This is getting nuts !!!
Yes, you can do this yourself fairly easily. A good original service manual will save you soooo much money if you are willing to turn a wrench. Some carb kits even come with directions. Don't get a Clymer or Seloc manual, get the original OMC manual.
He said 2 were warped .... but recomended rebuilding all 6 ... is this necessary ? Really dont want to spend any more than I have to or can afford to. Thanks!
Maybe, maybe not. If two are bad then I'd probably rebuild all of them. Are you having any fuel related problems? Can you see where the fuel is leaking? Some people will just take the carb bowls and lay them flat on a piece of sandpaper taped to a table. Then lightly sand it back to flush and clean well. Depends on how warped they are. The carb kits don't include new bowls, so that won't help.
factory service manual will be your best friend. Be careful on these minlon carbs, the bowls might have sealing grooves on them, thereby do not sand them.
think Im going to try sanding the bowls back flush ...
