haze under clear coat????

I have a 1990 Ranger 374V blue metalflake top cap it is smooth but has a haze you can see at different angles with the sun just right what will get this out short of wet sanding I would rather not and oxidation removers that work on this or are thery a waste of time thanks in advance

More than likely the start of oxidation.
Use a high speed buffer and rubbing compound to try and remove it without sanding. Then rewax and see if it is gone.

If it does not go away thru compounding then you may have to wetsand.

mine has a hase to it under artificial light or sun-light at different angles...I have taken care of my boat since day one and it looks like it did when I bought it .You do not have oxidation, this is normal!

Re: haze under clear coat???? (fishnhunt)

Fishunt, it is not normal to have a haze under the clear gelcoat on any glass boat.

It is possible to have the right angle of sunlight obscure the gloss on gelcoat, but if it looks to be hazed like a light fog, then there is a chemical reaction taking place in the gelcoat.
UV rays and heat will react with the O2 and the chemicals in the gelcoat to start the process.

You can see what I am talking about on the top part of my cap. When the sun hits it just right, like in the picture, it has a slight haze.....Im confused, I thought this was normal

Looks just like mine did when the Clearcoat seperated, the reason it looks like its under the clear>>>>>>>IT IS, it's actually air trapped between the surfaces

Air trapped in gelcoat ( porosity ) will show as pinholes in the clear gel or micro bubbles under the clear gel, not a hazing.

Re: haze under clear coat???? (twitch)

Twitch, I have the same issue with my 87 373. I`m starting to see slight haze on the edges of my cap. This boat has always been garage kept and maintained very well, the gelcoat is very smooth and shiney except for the above mentioned areas. I tried to buff those areas and I can still see the haze so I don`t think it`s oxydation. It`s under the clear.

It needs gelcoated you can do it your self if you got the time.
You can get clear gelcoat at bottom paint store on line.

Re: haze under clear coat???? (badss350)

ALL glass boats oxidize. Some more than others depending on the care the gelcoat has received, but all of them are starting to oxidize when they are out in the sun.

You may not see the sterotypical haze, or the cloudiness. It just may start on certain areas depending on how the sun hits the angles of the boat.

The older the boat and the more it gets used, the higher chance it will start to oxidize where you can see it.

3 things are needed for Oxidation to occur:

Oxygen, Heat and UV radiation.
Eliminate one of the three and you will slow down the process, but not eliminate it.
Kind of hard to eliminate O2, and heat. That leaves the UV rays from the sun.

A good high carnauba wax or polymer gelcoat sealer will help to slow down the oxidation from starting.
This wax layer diffuses (refracts) both UV and infrared radiation from the sun.

Without the wax/sealant coating, the radiation is absorbed by the pigment in the gel coat causing it to over heat, and trigger the chemical reaction that will dry out, dull and oxidize the surface.
