    Ranger restoration question

First off I would like to apologize if this has been addressed before but I did several searches and couldn't find anything. So I purchased a 1983 Ranger 373 last year and the boat has been repainted. The top cap has some of the original metal flake paint and the Ranger "swatch" is still there under the bumper. But the rest was painted white and a very poor job was done looks like no clear coat and lots of over spray all around. I was just messing around and wet sanded a small small on the top coat with 2000 grit wet sand paper and the paint removes VERY easily. I know they probably repainted the boat for underlying cosmetic issues so I guess my question is should I completely sand the entire boat and repaint? Or is there a different suggestion on what you guys would do with the boat. Thanks a lot and great forum!

    Re: Ranger restoration question (bassn4$$)

Someone on here had a chemical paint stripper they used to remove an automotive clear coat that was flaking off. I think they gave it high marks, might be easier than sanding. Before you bother, you should really make sure you dont have any rot, 83's have alot of wood in them. If its ok then you can decide how far to take your resto. Paint can last awhile if done right. Re gelcoating the boat will last the longest but is a ton of work, a propper paint job is a lot of work as well. Unless your going to refurbish the whole boat, I dont know if either is worth it. Goodluck hopefully all goes well

    Re: Ranger restoration question (ranger230v)

Well I believe the boat its self is in good condition the transom seems very solid and no soft spot in the boat anywhere. I was just wanting to remove the paint since its poorly painted and maybe whats underneath it would be to aweful bad. Is there a good paint to use if I do need to repaint it?
