Has anyone painted a whole outboard while still on the boat? I have a 1990 Johnson GT 175 and the paint has peeled in sheets, and is down to the bare fiberglass in spots on the cowl, and aluminum on the lower unit. I'd like to repaint this myself (I have a compressor and gun), but not sure if I'd need to take the motor off. Anyone try painting a motor on the boat? I'm on a tight budget, and would appreciate any guidance. Thanks!
I repainted an anniversary edition Evinrude XP150 while it was still on the boat. Just covered everything very well. Contacted OMC and got all the original color numbers
and used the primer they recommended. It came out great. (Sorry, No Pictures) It can
be done.
Me and my brother in law done my 82 Johnson 150 while it was on the boat. We pressure washed it off real good, then sanded everything real good with those brown colored scotch-brite pads. Just make sure you cover the whole boat with plastic, and mask off real good around the transom. It turned out nice, but sorry no pics.

what size painting gun did you use and did you have an inline moisture filter?
use a self etching primer for your base coat. it will help make the top paint last
