What are stringers?

I keep hearing people say t replace these or check them when doing a restore, but i am not sure what they are

they are basically floor joist. Best way i know how to describe them. I am sure a smarter person will come along though.

that makes sense to me, as i have done a few home remod's.

Is it a good idea to put in more then is all ready there, under the casting decks, since that is where we will be standing?

Just realize that the illustration is of an aluminum boat, not a fiberglass or fiberglass/wood boat.
