Painting the bottom of a fiberglass boat

I have a 1974 Ranger Boat that I restored last year and posted the pictures here. Well now I want to paint the bottom of the boat. This is a fiberglass boat with several small repairs on the bottom. It is solid now, but it is ugly.

What do I use to paint the bottom? I would rather not spray gel coat but if I have to I will? I cannot turn the boat over to paint so I must do it right side up.

Well you have 2 choices gelcoat or bottom paint, and painting it with either will be extremely hard on the trailer ! Your going to have to get it off the trailer to paint the whole bottom!

You will need to make some really heavy duty saw horses the shape of your hull, like from 4x8's and 2x 10 or 2x12 to sit the boat on while you paint the bottom , when that area is dry move the saw horses back or forward to reach the rest of the hull.

Or lift one side of the hull at a time, propping it up with 4x4 or 4x8 safety is the issue, you do not want the boat to fall, and smack you flat while under there! what ever you do make safety #1

If your hull is white on bottom, would be easier to just fix the areas with gelcoat where the bad spots are than trying to redo the whole hull, you will have to sand the hull and use wax and grease remover no matter which way you go.

Fixing your bad spots with gelcoat will be cheaper and easier than re doing the whole bottom with either product!

5 gallons of gelcoat is about 150 bucks!

Bottom paint like Awlgrip or Iterlux is very expensive 200-300 per gallon
