UPDATEDLivewell Valves on a 1985 Ranger 370 V, can anyone tell me how they work?

They have a (fill) and an (empty) setting, when its on fill, they will fill, but when I go down the river the well empties, when set on empty it stays full, is something hooked up wrong? How hard are they to get to, to clean or replace, or does anyone have an upgrade suggestion?

Bryan, it sounds like the rubber flappers are gone in the valves. Go to this link and ask for Roger Miller and tell him what you have. He sent me the new parts for free several years ago. His company made the valves. Check out his upgrades while you're there and also the battery watering system. As far as getting to the valves, they are under the fiberglass tray that holds the 3 batteries and oil tank. The controls are merely wire cables that flip the valves from open (empty) to closed (fill). I would check to make sure the valves were OK and that the cables were moving the levers on the valves before I got parts. The time to remove the valves, clean them, replace the parts and reconnect them after you have the battery tray out is about 15-20 minutes each. Mine were good as new again. Might want to check out your livewell and bilge pumps while you're back there. That's not an area you want to visit often. Here's the link:http://www.flow-rite.com/marine/contact.html. Let me know if you run into problems. I think I've done it all to my Classic over the years.

OK, I took out the valves, and found that they did in fact have a lot of trash in them, the rubber pieces were fine, just had calcium buildup on them, or something like that. cleaned them, lubed with wd40, and re-assembled. also found that the lines between the valves, and livewells, (both) as well as the lines going to the back of the boat....were clogged with Dirt Dobbers.....blew all that out, put everything back together, and went ahead and checked the bilge drain line from the pump, clogged too, Now all the lines, and pumps work like they are supposed to......

My question is (and I am gonna post in a separate thread).......Is there anything out there on the market that will allow me to put a screen of some type over the outside openings of these lines?

Bryan, Zap me an email and we'll talk about that. I can send you a picture or two. You should already have black plastic screens over the inlet fittings on the lower pad unless they have come off. They press on and lock with a 1/2" right twist. Should still be available from Ranger at about $5 each. I took an old aluminum window screen and a soldering gun with a spread tip for melting plastic and cut the screen to fit inside my front and rear livewells on both the drain openings and the overflow pipes and melted them in place. Now nothing gets in especially fish scales!

I have taken the plastic pieces off the inside of the livewells, and placed the fabric type screening over the hole, and screwed the pieces back on, when I look at the back of the boat at the transom I have 2 small white plastic openings, 1 large white opening, and a large metal opening in the center for the plug. The bilge drains out to the right side of the tip cap, and again its a small white plastic ring (same size as small ones on transom).....I will send you an email, and get more detailed. I am sure I can fabricate something, worst case, I will buy some small drain plugs, and plug them, just something else I will have to remember to take out.
