+1. and if you are wanting slightly large spots than tiny dots without are perfect border that a stencil would give you, practice. ie: I usually do about 20 or so on a "practice lure" until I remember the "feel" of it and then replicate that "feel" on the good lure.
ya thanks guys i dont want hard lines working on a pumpkinseed or blue gill
If you hold the stencil close to the bait, you get hard lines, Hold it off the bait some and it will fade.![]()

Also can be from too much air pressure and too thin of paint.

I'm guessing that the "star" that you speak of is the air pressure pushing the paint around on the bait.
There are a couple things you can try.
Turn air pressure down, but then you may have to thin paint some more which will cause the same thing.
the best thing is don't try to make the whole dot in one shot. Do multible coats. If you need to get a stensile as said above.
Try oil base paint but then you have fume problems. The guy on here that did one in the hardbook was doing this if I remember and thats probably why. Dots are easy on paper because it absorbs the paint and you don't get that star.
Try thinning the color more, first it will reduce the dry tip issue then use more air on the trigger. I start farther awat and move the gun close as the paint starts to come out. I hope this helps
