rod finish ?

one of my rods the clear coat finish is flakin off. what can i strip it down w/ to get the rest off and what to pit back on as a finish coat?thnx,mike

Hit it with some fine steel wool, clean thoroughly, then brush on some U40 Perma Gloss urethane finish.
Take your time and have plenty of light on the subject.
Sometimes it's hard to see what's been covered & what's not.
Saturate an ample round brush and spread it out, using as much as you can, without it being so much that it sags.
You need to keep moving, as it dries very quickly.
Makes for a nice job when it's done well.

little hint perma gloss loves humidity, turn a hot shower on steam it up than hang rod close by, good luck
also if you have all the guides off use a sponge bush with a hole in it, put the perma gloss on and one swipe will give you a great finish.

Best product I have found to strip old flaking finish is CitriStrip. It is in an orange colored stripper in a clear bottle, I get mine at Ace hardware. A few coats of citristrip and a superfine abrasive pad and I can get a blank to a clean matte state. I then take a coffee filter and wipe permagloss onto the blank. The coffee filter is lint free and leaves a smooth, streak-free finish. It sometimes takes two coats to get it right, but it will work, and look good.

I'm never built a rod but have been researching it and plan to rebuild some of my old rods first.

Once you get the finish off, do you need to apply a coat of Permagloss or can you leave it bare? I like the matte look like the Loomis and Kistler rods but do they have an coating? Seems like you would need to hold the surface fibers together and to protect the fibers from moisture, abrasion, etc.

You can leave the blank bare. If you are going to do that just buff the blank so it looks clean. There is no need to do the permagloss unless you want a gloss finish.
