    Painting jig heads

I poured some shaky heads today and I tried powder coating them. I did not like how uneven the paint was after it dried. I don't know if I was doing something wrong or is there a better paint to use than powder coat? They reminded of the uneven finish of the bagleys shaky head.

I hate powder paint.. I'd rather dip or spray paint and epoxy finish them.

If the paint is uneven then the powder was not loose enough. If you're not using a fluid bed, make sure the powder is very loose by shaking it up regularly.

I take an old fork and loosen up the powder every few jigs. Also, check to see that you don't overheat them before dipping. Too hot, and the powder gets too thick. A quick dip should coat the head evenly, then tap the jig lightly to knock off the excess powder. When they are finished curing, the head will be smooth and even. If it runs, or forms a "nipple", there's too much powder on it.

Loosen up the powder then heat the jig.Dip a brush in the powder and tap it with your finger over the jig head, that u can control how much your putting on.U can also do different colors that way.

powder paint works great for me

keeping it fluffed is key......I've tied probably 500+ bucktails for locals since summer making/painting my own heads as well as shakey heads and powder painting them all

there is no exact way to do it........just practice with different amounts of heat and you will get it

Dont get the lead head too hot before dipping it. I use a 5 count over a lighter flame, then dip it, tap it on the side of the jar to shake the excess powder off, then if its not shiny,I run it back over the lighter flame for a second or until it shines(this will not work with white or yellow paint because the flame will smudge the color). Works fine on dark colors. Also, if your hanging them on oven racks to cure afterwards, watch the oven temps. I use a lower temp than recommended but let them hang a little longer and cool as the oven cools.

get a fluid bed, worth every penny and when you double bake them they are bullet proof. I can drop my 3/4 oz jigs from 7' on the concrete and they do not chip
