    Johnson 115 Help Please!!!

I have a 1984 Johnson 115 Model #J115MLCRD Serial #J5959021. It was running fine when the prop appeared to start "blowing out", after several of these "blow outs" the engine died and will not restart. The engine seemed to be much hotter than normal operating temp. No alarms ever went off. The oil is still mixed using the VRO Pump. I can still turn the flywheel with my hand so I don't think the motor is locked up but I will not start. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

Were you tubing or towing a skier or some other water toy? Perhaps over rev it? Better take a compression test to start with the basics.

No I was towing anything and don't think it was over revved. The motor is on a pontoon boat and we were just cruising along.

hhmm on a pontoon, I kind of doubt you would have a blowout, more than likely something has been caught around the prop/lower leg and cut off the water supply, hence the now locked up motor, OR, you prop bush has spun and made a similar symptom as a blow out, and over reved for a jiffy and lost something internaly! both of these things are a slim chance, but a possibility.

I have to agree with ChampioNman on needing a compression test. Just because the motor turns does not mean that you don't have internal damage to the motor. If you have burned a cylinder you might still be able to rotate the crank. I had a 115 Johnson that was running fine and all of sudden just shut down. I thought the fuel line had come off and it started up fine and ran for about another 1/2 mile and quit again. Started it back up and it did the same thing. When I got to the ramp, a friend came over and looked at the motor and said he thought I had burned the engine up. I said no way but it turned out I had 2 burned cylinders and when the motor would quit it would cool off enough to let the motor start and heat up again and shut down.

Pull the spark plugs and take a look at them all should be cocoa brown on the tips. You need to verify your alarm is working too. To do this turn the key to on and disconnect the two tan wires on your cylinder heads and by using a jumper wire inserted into the female side of the plug touch the bare wire to ground on the block. You should get a chirp/beep. If not you may need a new horn.
