Spark plug torque on a Cross-Flow Critical or not?

How critical is the spark plug torque on a cross-flow engine. Reason for question is, I have not been in the spark plug changing mode, other than and occasionally as needed or must change to run mode, on my lawn mower, weed eater and John Deere 318 since the late eighties.
On all the air cooled motors just a little snug tug on the wrench was all they got. They were happy and so was I.
On my Grand National I was more critical on getting a good seat on the plug and fully compressing the plug gasket.
On my XP150, I was using my snug tug on the wrench feel torque until today. I looked at the owner's manual and it calls for 17.5 - 20.5 ft. lbs. using the old inch lbs wrench to remove and replace the old plugs. I only had 150 inch lbs. (12.5 ft. lbs.) on the old plugs.
I chickened out at 225 inch lbs (18.75 ft. lbs) on the new plugs. I suppose I am just afraid of stripping the spark plug hole.

If you can't run with the big dogs, just stay on the porch.

On your motor the plugs need to be tight, I do this by feel, when I feel the crush ring stop crushing....I stop.

I also do this like Rusty by feel, after doing a bunch you just know how they feel in the cylinder. CM

I thought I knew the feel too, until I put a wrench on it.
