    Carbed 2 strokes

I have been hearing and reading all along that the carbed 2 strokes are history with the end of the 2005 model year. Starting in 2006, "No carbed 2 strokes". I have been shopping boats fiercely over the last month or so and all the dealers tell me I cannot get a carbed 2 stroke. Well reading the April press release on the Evinrude site tells me something different. Read this below.

    Evinrude E-TEC will now be available in in-line 2-cylinder 40, 50, and 60-hp; in-line 3-cylinder 75 and 90-hp; V4 115 and 130-hp; V6, 2.5 liter, 150, 175, and 200-hp; V6, 3.3 liter, 200 HO, 225, 225 HO, and 250-hp models. As of 2006, the Johnson four-stroke line in North America, will only include 2.5, 4, 6, 9.9, 15, 25 and 30-hp engines. The 2.5-hp is a new addition to the line-up and will be available in early spring 2006. The Johnson carbureted two-stroke line-up will include 3.5, 9.9, 15, 90, 115, 150, and 175-hp models.

I don't know who you have been listening to, but the EPA and CARB do not say 2-strokes can't be built. They only limit the emissions on the motors.

The EPA 2006 rules only apply to manufacture's average total emissions which must be 75% less than the 1996 corporate average.

California only restricts sales of outboards that do not meet the EPA 2006 emissions.

I understand the emission requirements. What I have been told and been reading was that the manufacturers were meeting this standard by new technologies and eliminating carbed 2 strokes. All dealers I have been to have reinforced this notion and the manufacturers have made no announcements to the contrary until I came upon this statement from Bombardier. I am a fan of "old techology" 2 strokes due to simplicity, longevity and cost. I found it hard to believe that the industry cornerstones would be discontinued without a comparable ( cost etc..) replacement announced. Maybe some manufacturers have made a business decision not to offer carbed 2 strokes.

Remember, it is a percentage. Bombardier can continue to offer them becasue of the E-TEC offering. The E-TEC easily meets the lower emission requirement therefore allowing some of the carbureted 2-stroke engines to be offered.

That's the way I read it Kenneth, By being compliant in other areas etc... the ETEC Bomb is allowed to sell some carbed engines! However, nobody is shouting it out!!

    California SUX!!

You know, it just seems to me there are plenty of other area's where they could reduce pollution, like say, oil run off from the streets. Don't ever see them pulling over these oil burning, smoke belching cars and telling them they cannot drive them anymore. Or ones that leak oil profusely on the street.

We cannot even eat fish from most of the lakes around here, and let me tell you, its not from emissions "unfriendly" outboards.
