    Piankatank River

IS the large mouth fishing any good on the Piankatank?

I belong to Thousand Trails campground in Gloucester and always fish the ponds & lake on the grounds of the preserve but we have a boat ramp and direct access to the Piankatank and was wondering if the fishing is any good?

    Thanks

I have never fished it personally.I know some guys that do and say it's good bass fishing up the dragon run. Craig Vaughn did a tv show on the dragon one time.

I slay them way up the dragon. almost to the bridge. We take my buddies aluminum bass boat I wouldn't take a fiberglass due to numerous stumps and trees we'll bump but as said its no wake so you won't tear but so much up. Last Aug when everywhere else had water temps in the 80's we found 67 degree water up there and it is deep but narrow. Catch most our fish casting weightless plastics to any wood breaking the current and if floatsam has piled up its even better. Down closer to the mouth buzzbaits work well. They seem to be all I see anyone else throwing. If you have any more questions let me know. I'll try and upload some pics from our 80 fish trip.

Dragon is always on fire. Last time I was there we all caught at least 20 bass a piece. No real size that day but it was crazy to have 3 in a boat and all of us were catching fish. Its normally good all year even in winter. Drop the trolling motor at the no wake zone and start fishing.
