general question about maintaining my 225 johnson venom.

HI, I just recently purchased a 97 javelin with a 225 johnson venom. I was just wondering what annual or more often than not maintenance I could do on this motor to keep it running for as long as possible. oils, carb cleaners, anything that might help. I'd really appreciate anyone's input as I am new to owning an outboard or any marine motor at that. Thanks

    Matt

Run a good oil such as the xd-50,semi synthetic, a fuel additive is a good idea with todays fuels. Keep her happy with regular maintenance and she'll make you happy.

I`ve been a 97 Venom 225 owner since I bought it new.....do the plugs once a year and check them for proper color and wetness for proper fuel delivery.Look in the cylinders when changing plugs for signs of lean condition. Do the water pump every 4-5 years of average use.
CHECK BOLTS UNDER THE FLYWHEEL THAT HOLD THE TOP BEARING CARRIER NOW !!!! NOT KIDDING !!! NOW!!!
Other than one fuel pump, that is the only thing Ive had to do to mine in 12 years of above average use.
I won`t go into the details but if the bolts come out it will ruin your day and probably the engine for good. Mine did it at 10 years and despite trying a couple of different fixes it will suck air into the #1 cylinder and cause a lean burn in the cylinder and eventually seize. Only way I know to fix it now is a machine shop job. There are 6-7 bolt in the carrier under the flywheel. Even though I put my fingers on every bolt on the engine one bored, cold winter day in the garage, I somehow missed the ones in the carrier and am paying the price now.

If you haven`t already done it , I would pre-mix the gas and unhook the VRO pump. I have used Amsoil Synthetic for 10 years and the inside of the engine looks brand new and clean...no carbon build up in rings.
This is a great engine with just a little care it will last a long time .
