    Lower Unit Crack

I was heading to the lake the other morning when I hit a large chuck hole in the road. I fished for 7 hours and when I put the boat on the trailer I notice some gear oil leaking from the passengers side of the lower unit. I then looked closer and could observe a crack where my transom saver went onto the lower unit. It looks like a large dent and a crack approx. 1 to 2 inches. I was wandering if I could just weld the crack or if I would need to change the lower unit case?

Depending on how bad and where the crack is located specifically. A lot of these have been sucessfully repaired with a good cold weld compound, such as Marinetex or Belzona. You should avoid welding whenever possible as this puts tremendous heat thru the aluminum and usually causes warpage to the machined surfaces inside creating problems for the bearing races. Make sure the area to be repaired is ground down to metal, clean with Lacquer Thinner, and you should be fine.

    Re: Lower Unit Crack (Mackay1981)

I never cracked mine, but I noticed a lot of new l/u's scratched scraped worse than they should be. After hitting chuck holes and finding my motor toter broken...twice....I threw it away and started using the factory bracket, and liking it!!
