I know of someone running 4 hrs each way leaving 10 min to fish. Caught 25lbs in 6 casts and won 20k.
Randy has posted about having to carry gas cans in the cockpit and having to refuel them at a marina on the way back. That had to be several hundred miles.
How far were the guys running on the Louisiana Delta to fish years ago each way. Even think they had radar on the boats to navigate in the fog.
That run from Orange to Clear Lake through the Gulf of Mexico during the Sabine River events has to be up there for distance.
Joe Thomas used to run from Clayton to Rochester, on Ontario that's a hell of a gamble.
In my younger days I made several trips from munden point virginia beach to east lake NC. If memory is correct it's about 70 miles each way. I had an 18 ft. Winner and carried two 6 gallon gas cans with me.
Some high school kids and their captain ran from Paris Landing to Pickwick Dam I think 3 days in a row in a BASS High School Championship a few years back. That’s like 125 miles or so each way.
Scott Martin won one running to Mobile Bay wasn't it from Louisiana.
Distance is one thing, but distance over big water is another. Scott Dobson did the run from Sandusky to the St. Clair River a few years ago, and I'm sure a few more have done it. You're really putting your faith in the weather man for a run like that.
I just have to imagine that there's good fishing somewhere between these 70+ mile runs. It may not be good enough for a win, but probably good enough that you won't slide down in the standings. I don't think I'd want to risk the points on a mechanical failure or weather-related issue.
we had a camp on little sodus from 2005 to 2010. We still go back every year to fish in May. Imo, it’s picturesque small town Americana especially during the summer months. Lots of events and activities going on, parades, garage sales, kids playing in the park etc. ever since the covid real estate boom the housing market there is insane.
A few years ago people were running down to Mexico from Clayton. I know a lot of guys ran from Waddington to chaumont recently
I did the Mexico Bay from Clayton thing in an FLW w/ Ernie Freeman. We had a sh!t day w/ insane waves. We were coming back and had some electrical issues, bilge pumps were acting up and the wind was getting worse and a storm was moving in and we knew the waves at St Vincent would be epic. Ernie said “things could be way worse, you could be out shopping for a minivan w/ your wife”!
Wasn't there an FLW event years ago where Davey Hite was traveling several miles on the Mississippi to fish for one hour. Clunn was also a top five finisher in the event and commented on picking up other tournament contestants off the buoys after they had boat problems. I think Hite was traveling more than two hours each way, but when he got to that oxbow lake, his fish were quality fish and they were deep.:bows:
Sabine River tourney those guys running to Houston… not sure the distance but it’s a hike
When they fish the waccama in SC they run all the way to upper Cooper river and I think they fill back up run then come back and fill up again to get back so 3 tanks believe how ever far that is
Back in 80's Basil Bacon ran from James river to North river at Currituck Sound. Not sure but I think he was fishing out of a 340 Ranger.
The final day of that tournament Wesley strader was following him in one of the FLW rangers and it broke down so Scott told Wesley to leave the boat floating and get in with him and they would get it on the way back. Well they never found it on the way back and FLW could never find it when they went and looked for it. A month later FLW got a call from the coast guard that it had been found in Tampa, Florida.
Just looked it up on Bassmaster for the 2011 Claasic. it was 240 miles round trip to most of the guys who rain to Main Pass to fish. 250 miles to Freshwater Bayou. Some guys had 30 mins to fish, some had almost 60 minutes to fish. They had fog most days, so most had the new broadband radar set up on their boat to run in the fog.
In the early 90’s there was a tournament at Lake Powell. I believe it was a Won Bass. An angler drove from Waweap to Bullfrog Bay two days in a row to win. Approximately 115 miles each way. If I remember correctly Don Iovino took second fishing around the docks at the launch site.
yes sir, that is more accurate… I didn’t do round trip. I clocked it to the jump for the gas stop.. it’s another 10 miles or so downriver, another couple extra miles if you zig zag around the duck… I don’t know exactly where they were fishing… I don’t think were going far down river.. back in them years delta duck was on fire good… Ike’s hole off Dennis pass from the first classic wasn’t in play for this one..
Didn’t Palanuik make a long run on the St. Lawrence some years back? Was running like 2 1/2 hours or more one way? I think he won that tournament too. It was a BASS elite tournament I believe.
Skeet Reese won a BASS tourney at Lake Powell at Bullfrog Bay in the late 90’s. (95-100 miles). The year before it was won in the San Juan River, another 95-100 miles. And in both of those events, there were Pro’s running all the way up to Hite, which is another 45-50 miles past Bullfrog Bay.
Yes, he did. From Waddington on the St Lawrence River out to Henderson Harbour on Lake Ontario. Factoring all the twitsy bits through the Thousand Islands it is almost 90 miles. The big issue is 25mph can seem like a good speed on Lake Ontario with some wind which really lengthens the running time. This of course is in the morning before the Thousand Islands boat traffic gets crazy which added an hour to his return trip. He said driving through the river on a sunny afternoon in July is like driving your boat in a washing machine. Nevertheless he made it work and won the Tournament. Perhaps not the longest trip for these pros, but certainly took some stones to make the run with so many variables affecting your running speed.
Mike Macallan La to Houston Bay I believe was around 80 miles 1 way. At Wingha Bay a number of Elites ran to Charleston Harbor and up the Cooper River, I believe was about 75 miles one way. (Forgive spelling)
It's a haul. Probably pushing 100 miles with some of it in tge gulf if I recall.
We fished a championship there a few years ago and ran from were they launched in Orange up to the Neches River. We had to run across Sabine Lake and through the Houston Shipping Channel. It was cool seeing all the commercial fishing boats in Sabine Lake and the ships in the channel. We had around a 90 minute run each way each day. The morning run was brutal because we were pumped and ready to fish and the ride seemed like an eternity.
St. Lawrence River. Stay tuned:thumb up2:
pretty sure that was when they were still limited to 150 hp engines which makes it pretty crazy. Nowadays it is not uncommon for guys to run from Bullfrog Marina to the backend of the San Juan river, takes about 96 minutes at 67 mph (equates to about $225 in fuel. I did it 3 days in a row last year to only end up winning a $50 gift card. LOL). Lake Powell needs to be on your bucket list - coolest scenery you will ever see and I have been on a lot of big name lakes from northern Idaho to central Florida and hands down it is amazing.
