When I fished tournaments I never trusted scales, used a balance beam, but the Elites seem to trust a particular brand of scales as they look the same on the tv coverage. What scale are they using as I occasionally fish a private lake that can produce a PB? I understand that the accuracy of scale is relative to which fish weighs more or less as that is in the margin of error with the actual weight but the many times I saw the scale used on the Sabine makes me think that it is a good scale.
a lot of guys use the rapala scale. but a lot of guys also sandbag their basstrakk weights.

Check out catch commander, they are pricey but they are supposed to be very good.
I use the Rapala touch screen scale but I always weigh the fish and turn it off and then back on again. Usually the second time it’s 2oz heavier. Tried a third time and it’s the same as the second. I’ve noticed the first weigh is 2oz low quite commonly.
I have both the Catch Commander and the Rapala. The Catch Commander is my go to! Easy to use, easy to see in daylight and very accurate. In over 3 years of use, my total weight has been accurate to within 1oz, mostly less, to our expensive club scales.
I only keep the Rapala in my boat as a back up or if a co angler wants to use them.
I have to fiddle with my rapala to get it to work .I had a birthday so I asked for a bubba nd so far it works anyway
The Brecknell scales MLF used are quite accurate but don’t store weights for culling. I caught a good fish �� Saturday that weighed 4.97 lbs. on my Brecknell and 5.00 on the scale used at the weigh in.
Bubba is the new sheriff in town!
I use scales for most, but if they are close and I know an once matters, the balance beam comes out. There were several times they went to a balance beam after weighing them from what I saw.
I've done the same and I have not had an instance yet that the scale was wrong.Quote:

I bought one a year ago. I think it locks too fast and pulled it out of the passenger console two weeks ago and crystals are all piled up in the bottom of the read out.Quote:

I record tournament weights on an app on my phone (Easy Culling) so I don't care about stored weights.
The new Bubba Scale is really sweet but it's expensive
A lot of pros use the rapala touchscreen. I have the rapala high contrast scale and really like it. Anything that's close I balance beam to double check, but generally whatever the scale says is right. Hoping to snag a bubba scale at some point though. Looks really nice.
Does it matter if it is accurate if it is consistent?
Not really, but it is nice to have a good idea where you are at weight total wise.Quote:

Rapala no good for me. Trashed it. Got the Rivet one from Amazon (see previous post). Half the price and works much better.
Everyone has their preference and I’m always amazed at how some are so adamant that the one they use is the best
Then there’s the bubba scale people are touting that only a few have actually held with little real world use
Ranger Rod posed the important question and consistency is more important than accuracy you never want to cull a fish that should take the ride and all of the aforementioned scales will get you close to the correct total
But as a few have mentioned a balance beam is the best judge of weight you can have
Like many I will always beam any fish that are close in weight
I also think the way people use and care for their scale is a determining factor in how they rate scales I have a Rapala touch that is going on 6 or 7 years now with no issues and I fish a bunch of tournaments so it gets used a fair amount
I also think seeing the majority of the Elite pros use it says something sure a few are sponsored by Rapala but most use that scale by choice
I’m not saying it’s the best I hate trying to read it on sunny days but it works for me
I periodically test my scale with actual known weight objects. In the boat when not in use it stays in a padded, waterproof case with batteries removed. When in use its stored in same case in the compartment behind driver's seat.
I have and like the Catch Commander... a few pros use it also, but I do see more using the Rapala Touch Screen. I have the Rapala High Contrast also, but it's finicky and the buttons are small. One thing I noticed about the pros using the Rapala Touch Screen, it seem like they have to hit a lot of buttons, and seems to have to re-do the weighing often... I see Kyle "double wieighing" a lot in his vids...not sure if a scale issue or user isssue though :).
Same as others, have beam in the livewell for close ones...
I like my catch commander. It took a little bit to get used to though.
If you look at where these scales are made, almost all are made in China. They use and electrical resistor load cell....to calculate weight. I have been fortunate with the last two I have bought. I have some weights we used for checking scales at the plant...and check the scales I bought with those weight. The scale will be calibrated for both a tare weight and a Linear weight....meaning the scale could be right on at 2 lbs, but off an ounce at each additional weight.... as an example. The scale I have now is within an ounce or two all the way up.
I’m really liking the new Bubba scale. The culling was extremely easy using their system. And I probably caught 60 during that tournament. Most I’ve ever caught on a tournament day.
I wish someone made a better version of the ardent balls for culling. I have a set of clip on cull tags that swing the balance beam pretty good. Not sure that would be enough to make a difference but it may be as big a difference as weighing on a scale. Seems to me some of the pros don't have a good system for culling,, or maybe the pressure of fishing for 100k makes you triple check everything.

every time i think my touch screen rapala isnt accurate, i test it out with cans of miller lite. each can adds .78 lbs. its accurate.....
