I have always had problems with the accuracy of my fuel guage, but I was always told that the problem was with the shape of the fuel tank due to a step in the tank and that all Cobras suffered from this, and that there was no sending unit that could read it accurately. If this is the case, I can't see how replacing the sending unit with another of similar design could make a difference. Is the Moeller unit a different design? I have the 45 gallon tank in my 190 and it consistently reads like a 32 gallon tank. When it shows empty, it still has 12-15 gallons in it. It is annoying but not too hard to deal with unless you are making super long runs all the time.
there are six at the bottom of each back are two screws you have to really look pull up on bottom of back rest and look below. If you have center step between the seats fold it down you will see six screws the center one of each will be longer those two long ones come out.
my 2000 201D also has a 45 gal tank there is no step in it the tank is flat .you are not having problems boats are set up with a little cushion so that when your guage reads empty you still have a little to get in. unlike autos you cant get out walk to the store and get some.most sending units face the front and boats are heavier in the back so your tank is not level thats why they put the float to the front so when it reads E you still have little fuel you can turn the float to center and get more acurate reading.my problem was reading E i still had 28 to 30 gal . new sending unit fixed this. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/smile.gif
Thinking about trying this. Academy = 4 miles away. Yesterday fuel gauge was on E but still had 20Gals Remaining. I too have experienced the fuel volcano when refilling.
On the screws, are these wood screws or do they go into some threads when I put them back in? Just wondering if there might be issues with the hole becoming rheemed when I try to put them back in?
Also, bout how long does this take? Just wondering how long to send the wife and kids out for while I work on it.
This sounds like a great fix and I hope it works.

Update:
4/6/08 Academy had the Tempo fuel senders for $9.88. Picked one up and as soon as I get a chance I am gonna try to install it.

Time depends on the individual should be about 2 or 3 hour job. the screws that hold the seat look like wood screws just dont over tighten and you will be ok. also look closely at the screws that hold down sending unit make sure they are the same size and thread if not reuse the old ones.
The screws are stainless steel sheet metal screws.
thanks
