so what do i do if i would like to take my strait cork grip rods and make them split grips.. do you just cut off the old one and slide your new ones over it.. and where would i get the stuff from? i guess what i need to know is what all do i need to do? do you glue the new ones on.
I sure someone will be along to answer your question. I just cut the cork off and removed tne exess glue. I then drilled out the cork to fit and glued it all togather and sanded it. you can get everything you need from mudhole.com
JWZ,
I simply mark my straight cork handle where I want to make the splits, rasp down the cork a bit until I get close to but not hitting the blank. I pick off the cork either by hand or hard plastic pick. You can heat that portion to loosen the epoxy a bit. I finish the the blank with 320 wet sand. The big picture is to remove the cork and epoxy without getting into the fibers of the blank. Any method you use to accomplish that is fine. After you have made and shaped your grips, you need to decide how to finish the gap between. There are many options. You can tiger wrap, marble, or simply paint. The easiest would be to add pigment to some permagloss and wipe it on. The easiest to find pigment is Testors paint. Leave the bottle inverted for a while Do not mix it up. Then carefully remove the cap and take some of the clumpy substance and not the solvent. Mix the pigment with PG and wipe on. You can also mask and spray paint/clear coat. Experiment, do what you like, that is what makes it custom.
Here are some examples. Hope this helps

how do you do that finish on the split grip section... like the one g-loomis that is blue and white looks great! http://xs-s.com/zf/images/smile/emthup.gif
It is actually about 7 colors ranging from black to white plus silver. To make that effect, I mixed testor paint (without solvent-do not mix, invert and take goop, not liquid) with TM lite. I then made a continium of colors with black on one end and white on the other by mixing different amounts of either black or white to get different levels of gray. I then added silver to make it sparkle. I put the rod the dryer rack and applied the base coat with a brush and then added different colors by spotting with a toothpick and drawing out with the point of the toothpick. all the while rotating and drying/curing. I have done a couple and like them. One learning that have is to not shape the taper of the cork until after the marble; the paint and epoxy will bleed into the cork. It is better to leave the cork blunt, then marble, then tape and shape the cork. Makes a better finish.
Here is a close up of the marble. Very complex in person. Hope this helps.
