Proabably a really really noob question, sorry
Ok, sorry if this is a really newbie question, but I can't seem to find an answer. Whenever I take my boat out when its cold (mid 30's to 40's), I have the hardest time getting it up on plane. I give it throttle and it starts out like normal but just as it gets on plane, the engine jumps to about 8500+ rpm's (almost like spinning tires in a car... alot of noise but no distance), the font end stands up, and then it chokes off. Now this only happens for about the first 10 minutes of 'trying' to get going. The rest of the day things go as normal. The engine is a 2007 Yamaha 150 Vmax on a 2007 stratos 285 XL. Any suggestions? http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/ohwell.gif So do I need to let it warm up for like 10 minutes first or something? I never see anyone else doing it....

No idea where to start. Just sounds like prop blowout (the over revving) but if you are anywhere close to 8500 rpms, that motor will not stay together very long. But, you should have that pretty much all the time. Also don't know what to tell you on the boat standing up like that. Sounds like it's not trimmed all the way down. Wish I could be more help. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/ohwell.gif
A motor does need to warm up in cold weather, but what you say yours is doing is not just due to the motor being cold.

It appears to be prop blowout (couldnt remember what it was called). As for the 8500 rpm's, stupid laptop, i hate the blue button mouse, always jumping my pointer around. It is more like 5500 rpms i assume. Anyways, it is a tempest 3 blade. Maybe after fusing and complaining for 10 minutes while trying to get up on plane, I just get the feathering rhythm down and can get it up with out issues for the rest of the day.
To make things easy, should I just get a four blade prop? Suggestions on a good one? I honestly could care less about speed. Thanks.

If it's a Tempest, you should have the PVS plug system in it. That would be the holes that are drilled into the prop close to motor end. What size plugs do you have in it? You can buy different size plugs cheaply at your dealer. The different sizes are used to adjust the prop blowout to help with holeshot.
I wouldn't go to the four blade prop just yet. That boat likes a three blade pretty well. I ran a Tempest on my 285 with 150 Johnson. http://xs-s.com/zf/images/smile/emthup.gif

hub might be slipping in prop,if one is gonna spin a hub,it usually does it in cold weather.
Re: Proabably a really really noob question, sorry (1niceStratos)
I just checked and the 3 'plugs' are all the same size, look to be the largest opening ones when looking at what is avaiable when looking at http://sites.mercurymarine.com...ORTAL.

That has happen to me in the past as well. It usually happens when I take off before I trim the motor down. Doesn't matter what the temp is.
