Need some SERIOUS HELP with braid knots................

Im a newbie to braid. I have tried the Berkley braid knot, palomar knot and for some reason, when I set the hook, half the time I loose my hook and weight. Ive tested these knots by tying the hook on and putting it in my vice and wrapping the other end around a large dow rod and pulling the dow with both hands and I cant break these knots...but when I get to the lake----they break all the time. Ive tried gluing the knots and cant figure this out??????
I use the berkley and palomar knots on mono all the time...and very seldom break off unless I havnt re-tied in a while......
    HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I suspect you are using tungsten weights without an insert and are fraying the braid.

    Is there a fix?

not positive but watch the glass bead....i have had them break when using tungsten weights on a C rig......not sure if the brass is hard enough to break them but it might be jsut enough to fray the line some

thats another reason i went to Tru Tungsten Weights and Tru Tungsten Force beads

I always use a Palomar knot but I always add a half hitch to finish it off. I don't know if that helps or not but I never have a knot failure.

What brand of line and what weight are you using?

Are you sure you're not clipping your tag end too short?

Im clippin @ 1/4 inch off.
I cant break this stuff with a vise and dow rod........It must be the weight/bead.

It has to be the weight or bead fraying your line. I use Power Pro and never a knot problem. I was using my old lead cylinder weights for Carolina Riggin and it was fraying my line bad. I got some Tungsten weights with the inserts. I use a glass bead and a brass ticker next to the hook. No problems so far.

i saw a while back where there were some claims of some people that had bought power pro off of ebay and it wasnt actually "real" power pro.....might be the case here...go buy some at a store and see if thats the case

Re: Need some SERIOUS HELP with braid knots................ (Luke)

Thats kind of what I was getting at, I had a guy in my club buy some off E-Bay, I think it was like 50 or 60 lb. Anyways he was using it for frogging and broke like 5 or 6 fish off on the hookset, said he could not break it with his hands either. I remeber there was a link awhile back about there being some imitation Power Pro that was supposed to be junk.

Power Pro is the best braid. Have you tried tying a double palomar?

You should tie a DOUBLE Palomar.. with braid of that strength you really should never break it. In the 2 years of using braid i haven't ever broken it. Also I would never buy line off of ebay tho..

I also use glass beads, but the round ones. I have had the faceted style cause my braid to break very easley.

Try Suffix or Stren Super Braid. I've had 50# Power Pro breakage issues also. Or bump it up to 65# or drop to 40# Power Pro. Never had either of those break, only 50. Maybe like others said, you might be cutting your tag to short.

It may be your hook. If you are not using a hook made for braid the line will slip around the eye and get in the gap, then it will cut the line. Try a welded eye hook.

Check all of your ceramic eyes on the rod because sometimes they crack or chip and are like razor blades.50lb power pro is as strong as any line on the market.Like said before check your hook eyes also. When it is the hook you will get your Knot back and not be broken.

interesting info about ebay powerpro... I'll keep that in mind...
I live in the northeast and when i set the hook and come back with nothing it means one thing... PIKE
I use the old trilene knot with 50# power pro no problems here... I just add a few wraps...
I use the BMF hooks with the welded eyes... sometimes your knot will slide around on the hook and get cut on the little notch on the hook eye...
you could use some super glue if you so choose...
I don't know why your breaking off... I'd check your line for frays...
One more tip I guess... Don't set the hook so hard... see what happens...
    stick with it...
