    175 G2 lower unit ?

The maintenance schedule says to " inspect" the lower unit oil once a year or every 100 hours. Doesn't say anything about changing the fluid or tell you how to do it? Do they not want the owners messing with this and think it should last until the scheduled 5 year dealer maintenance?

Do you have 100 hours on your motor yet? Unless you have a reason to inspect the lower such as fishing line on the prop shaft there should be no reason to screw with the LU fluid. It is designed to run that long.

It is a G2, there as a lower unit lube reservoir behind the starboard cover. Looking at the reservoir will indicate the level and lube condition. If there is water in the lower unit the lube or it is burnt it will be indicated in the reservoir.

Just get a 5/32 allen wrench, i prefer a T handle, and turn the 6 1/4 turn fasteners to remove the panel.

The plug is behind the front water inlet screens.

    Oil Capacity:
Gearcase only – 38.9 fl. oz. (1180 ml)
Gearcase, vent hose and oil reservoir 45.6 fl. oz. (1350 ml)

    G2 gearcase sight-glass and fill level.jpg

Carefully remove vent hose from the reservoir
upper fitting. Remove the low water intake screens. Then
remove the lubricant drain/fill plug. Drain the lubricant
from the gearcase into a suitable container.

Trim the engine up slightly to completely drain
lubricant from the gearcase. Use shop towels to
    clean up any spilled oil.
    Inspection
Inspect the lubricant for metal chips. The presence
of metal fuzz can indicate normal wear of
the gears, bearings, or shafts within the gearcase.
Metal chips can indicate extensive internal damage.

Secure the gearcase in a vertical position.
Use Gearcase Filler, P/N 501882, to slowly fill the
gearcase with HPF PRO lubricant until lubricant
level in the reservoir is between the marks as
    shown

IMPORTANT: Filling the gearcase too quickly
can cause air pockets and the gearcase may not fill
    completely.

Clean plug seal area and install the lubricant
drain/fill plug and a new seal. Tighten the plug to a
    torque of 60 to 84 in. lbs. (7 to 9.5 N·m).
Install the water screens. Tighten the screw to a
    torque of 10 to 14 in. lbs. (1.2 to 1.6 N·m).

Yes, i do have 100 hrs on it.
Seahorse, thanks for the detailed instructions. They don't mention reinstalling the upper vent hose first before removing the the lubricant fill tube, but i am assuming you do to prevent the lube from running back out.

On the small block G2 the lower unit fluid reservoir is on the port side.

They are very strong on the low end. The gear ratio change from G1 to G2 small block really provides a ton of hole shot. We need to experiment a bit more with propping next season. Super quiet, idle in neutral at 400 rpms. Oil consumption is crazy low. I hope to have a 175 next year on a boat we had a 200HO G1 this year so that should provide an interesting comparison.

That oil and oil level look great, but be aware that if water is present in the gear case, it will go to the bottom, and you are looking at the top. The G2 has a no-maintenance recommendation for 500 hours, but you will hear a lot of old-school resistance on that. What you can do is loosen the drain screw at the bottom just a touch, to see what the lube at the bottom looks like. If it looks clean and amber in color, quickly reinsert the drain screw and go about your business. Or, change the lube every season [what many will say], changing the gasket on the drain screw at the same time.

Sorry to bump an old thread. I have a 2020 G2 HO 150. I’d like to replace the lower unit oil as mentioned. Does the washer on the drain plug need to be replaced? And can anyone help me out with a part number on this? Thanks in advance!

Thank you for responding. I tried using that but there are no corresponding numbers in the description list to cross reference with the diagram. Min is a C150GLPAFE. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Definitely replace the washer.

I think some of these G2 service intervals are just too long. I'm not a pro but 5 years on a impeller? That's ridiculous. Watch your idle water pressure. It will drop below the recommended minimum way way before that.

I do the gear oil every year, too. Can't hurt.

Oh.... the thermostats... that's another story. I would suggest keeping an eye on those more frequently than 5 years. At least review and understand the cooling system and what the temps on your MFD are telling you about your motor. I could show you pics of mine that would surprise you.
