Our dog is scratching herself to death..

We've tried different foods, shampoos, snacks, etc. She's even been getting a Zertec every day. Any other ideas? No fleas to be seen but she also gets a flea treatment every month as well. Inside most of the time. She's 4 years old and has not had this problem this bad until this summer.

Our dog had the same issue. Randomly just started scratching himself raw to where he'd bleed. The vet said it was an allergic reaction to food but after a month or so we brought him back for testing. The vet said he was allergic to so much random and everyday stuff (like fresh cut grass). They gave him some meds experimental meds but they wanted to do a report on if it worked. Well three months later all the itching stopped and his hair green back. Was it expensive? Absolutely, but he was worth it. (Expensive for us might not be too bad for others)

Thanks, I'd try that but she's already on a grain-free food that has salmon, whitefish and salmon oil along with some other ingredients.

Do you remember what the meds are? We're going through the same thing. She at the same food for 4 years with no problems, now she's on some stuff that costs more than a steak dinner! I don't think it's a food allergy, either. We do know that she has an intolerance to beef so she never gets anything beef related but that made her throw up, not scratch.

Go see a veterinarian, preferably one who specializes in atopic dermatitis.
Testing can determine the specific causes, it isn't inexpensive but it's affordable.
Odds are good that it's environmental, especially since it ramped up.
However, please do feed your dog(s) a high quality food - Merrick, for example.
A specialist can diagnose and treat effectively - Apoquel, Cytopoint, etc.

Guys if you ever listen to me on anything this is it. Go to your vet and get the dog put on Apoquel. Our Golden was doing the same thing. Tried every food out there. It is very $$, BUT within 4 hours our dog quit scratching. She has been on it for 6 months still doing great. We had our dog blood tested. She is allergic to grass and cats

I have to use a veterinarian recommended allergy shampoo. Get wants about twice as much as I can find it online. Called Maleseb. I use dog shampoo with oatmeal and oils, the rehash with Maleseb.

This is probably our next step. My sister's dog is on this as well.

She does it right in front of us. The worst part is she sleeps in our bed a lot and does it there, too. Hard to sleep when she's doing that.

My dog had this problem too and our vet recommended Catalyst chews. She takes one in the morning, one at night. Problem solved. Not too expensive either.

Make her food yourself. Easy and cheap, but most importantly good for her skin and overall health. We've been doing it for years. Got tired of throwing out dog food they would only peck at or refuse to eat at all, and we tried it all.

Protein (beef, chicken, lamb, etc) is always the primary ingredient, brown (not white) rice and maybe some peas and carrots mixed in. Drain away all the fat after cooking the meat. Occasionally we'll add chicken livers/gizzards to the mix, other times scrambled eggs and olive oil. Use no spices at all. We usually make a big batch on Sunday, freeze half (it's fresh and will turn quickly) and keep the other half in the fridge in a container for the week. It sounds like a lot of work but it's not once you get the routine down.

That's what I thought but just wanted to rule stress out.
We had a cockapoo that would do it really bad when his skin dried out. Had to use oatmeal shampoo.
He used to constantly clean his paws. I always said he was hungry he could taste the oatmeal.
Man do I miss him !

Ok I've had a cluster of dogs that have had a lot issues from allergies to thyroid problems. One Weimaraner is on 4 benedryl tablets a day...
One cocker is on thyroid meds as was my old Golden...
My rat terrier Pokey takes a steroid when the pollen gets too bad and she'll turn firecracker red when it starts. She's allergic to grass...
the youngest cocker is the worst, she take 4 benedryl per day and was taking apoquel and it helped but didn't solve. She also has a steroid to take if it's really bad..dog is allergic to everything. Scratches her ears and chews her feet a lot. Waking us up doing it. She is on a grain free food all by herself. Now we gave her an injection a couple months ago and it calmed her down a ton. Enough to get her off the apoquel. She just had her 2nd injection...when Amber gets home I'll ask her what it was called.. None of my dogs use medicated shampoo..they all get Johnson baby shampoo because it won't hurt their skin and a few get a oatmeal rinse...
