    Tip of the Day

Ya'll close off your livewells. Dump a couple gallons of water in each one. Go to Wally world, spend $4 on a gallon of RV antifreeze.
Dump that in the livewells also.

Pump, circulate, move valves, and run all your switches.
Then drain. Then close em back off until the next tournament.

Next time you hit the lake for tournament. Just run the pumps a few minutes while warming up boat.
Nothing will be frozen, broken, or not working.
Nothing worse than holding a 7lb fish and looking a dry livewell.

Mainy northerners do this while winterizing...it will rinse right out is my understanding and in non-toxic, or at least that's what I've read.

Re: Tip of the Day (wildkat7)

Shouldn't hurt fish, it's safe to drink.
    Tastes not good though.
Once boat is in the water, just open the livewell and run the pumps for a minute or so.
    That will clear the system.

For 50 below, they say to use it straight. I mix it with water. Not looking for 50 below and I don't mind a little slushy ice. I just don't want the pumps or lines to freeze solid....again.

I know antifreeze will kill the chit out of a dog, can't imagine it safe for fish. But... go to wally world and but coco nut oil for camper valves and this would do the trick... just saying

Re: Tip of the Day (Cooney)

But he's not talking about automotive AF. The RV stuff is non-toxic. We've been using it for years in our RV, and it will not harm us or our pets. It tends to take a while to flush out of the system in the spring, so I'm sure we've ingested a bit of it.

I keep my boat in a heated garage, so no worries about the livewell freezing, but good advice, none the less.

So the boat’s on the trailer in a carport with all drains open. After the first freeze we’ve had in Texas since I bought the boat I go to launch it and the automatic bilge kicks on. Of course the first thing I think of even knowing I did the double walk-around pre check is that somehow I’ve left the drain plug out, so I pull it back out and no, it’s in. So I back it back in and the bilge kicks on again. Looking in the bilge I have a big flow of water coming in. When I took it to the dealer he said the livewell in-tube had frozen and split the pipe connection.

How could this happen with everything opened up? I’ve owned boats for 40 years and all were carport boats and I’ve never had one freeze. This has to be a design flaw and a potentially dangerous one. Who would expect I would have to winterize every night while it’s freezing? Or when I’m on vacation and in a hotel parking lot? Or what if I owned and fished in Minnesota or any other northern state with daily freezes? What would happen if I was on plane for an hour and since it was out of the water, it froze and broke, and I come off plane and immediately start sinking?

    Am I missing something here?
