    Ultrex quest wiring

So I splurged and ordered an ultrex quest which should arrive next week. Wanting to make sure I have everything for the install ahead of time and have a question. I have a 24v system running a Minnkota edge, will my current 60 amp breaker and plug end work for the new motor?

Read the installation instructions from the Minnkota website.

Have to upgrade the wiring from the batteries to the front to 4 gauge from the 6gauge the boat probably has in it. Had to do this myself last spring. The manual online will give you all this info

Thanks for the replies, don’t know why I didn’t think about them having the info online. Looks like my breaker and wiring is good, didn’t find anything about the plug, I’ll just replace it while I’m at it.

Breaker is good but not a bad idea to replace to a new one. That is what I did and then you will have a backup

I was mistaken about the wiring in my boat, it was only 8ga. I ordered 6ga wire, new 60 amp breaker and plug. My motor showed up yesterday and will work on the install this weekend.

6 ga should be more than adequate.

8 is a little small. Doubt you would ever notice.

We ran them in the 70's on 10 or 12, but we were not very smart.

Plug would personally concern me unless you are getting one of the 70A plugs from Marinco or Battery Tender.

The plug I ordered is the Minnkota MKR-28, rated for 60amp continuous. Any reason not to use it?

Nope you'll be fine I've run the same plug on my boat going on 4 years now with no issues

Good plug IMHO. I was not aware of that product.

It’ll seem like an extra long wait for soft water to test the ultrex out.

No reason--it's a good plug that I've used for several years.

Is that a combo switch/breaker? very important to have switch to turn off while charging batteries
Also verify 6-gauge wiring for motor, most will have this size, some older boats had 8 gauge, too small
    Thank You Leon Pugh

So I got everything installed over the weekend, it was pretty straight forward. I was able to do the install by myself but would get help if I need to do it again. I now have 6ga wires from the batteries to the TM receptacle, it’s only about a 5’ run. Pairing my phone with it went smoothly, and was able to get everything set as I wanted it on the app. Can’t wait to get it on the water.

No separate switch, I normally unplug the motor at the end of the day.

this will over time cause a problem with loose pin fit, poor connection and a lot heat at that connection, recomend using a Bussman or blue seas switch/breaker 60 amp

I see what you are saying now, the Minnkota breaker I installed is like the blue seas one.

Agree, and that is why I have always thought that the best set up is to hard wire the troller connection behind the bow panel, and then install a switchable breaker at the battery for disconnecting while charging.

From the looks of that plug, it should be more than capable of being plugged/unplugged many times. The switchable breaker is, at least in theory, better, but I wouldn't be overly concerned as long as you ALWAYS unplug the TM before charging.

You are certainly ok with the breaker you have chosen.
