I never have worked on any of this stuff before. Did all this myself.
Water pump was shot, my mech is no longer in business thank God, his dinks only did the impeller. Did not replace the metal plates, The plates were almost worn completely thru. They left out 3 o rings. Don't know how it pumped at all.
Then charging and tach was not working correctly. 12v on gauge, tach bouncing like a ping pong ball.
Looked at powerpack was 14yrs old. Decided rest of the system was around same age. No sense in troubleshooting that. Replaced with: NOS Evinrude parts. Powerpack, timing base, stator and rectifier. Gummed up stator and base.
Rectifier posts in water jacket were half gone/had scaled off.
Fixed that runs like a scalded ape now for a old boat. Then all 3 batteries croaked. Not done yet LOL
Found bad leak between hull and cap. Resealed from motor to consoles.
Last time out in DEC the steering was a beotch, original r and p from 1990. So anyone considering doing a steering replacement neither cable or hyd is a easy job. Pick your poison. But to me the hyd was just a little lesser of the 2 evils.
I just finished installing this hydrodrive system MF350W Outboard Hydraulic Steering System up to 350 HP for boats with cylinder, pump, twin tube and oil. Precision drive, Anti-Feedback valve
790$ then 859$ with VAT on amazon. Not much more than teleflex NFB dual rack and pinion. Hydrodrive has their own website also. No I don't have 350hp but it can run 65mph/55 knots. The 255w is rated just at that 65mph break so went bigger to be safe.
Did not want the cheap vevor for obvious reasons, the seastar was to stupid priced even used. Uflex was a bit cheaper. This hydrodrive seemed like a good compromise few have used them on scream and fly with good results.
Have not had a chance to test this yet, mother nature been to ugly. But as soon as get a half way nice day plan on taking it out.
Lastly all this was brought on by a simple single freakin fishfinder install that went bad in a hurry. But cheaper than a new one or buying someone else's headache. At least I know what I have and to deal with.
