    2005 mercury xr6 oil leak

2005 mercury xr6 150hp s/n 1B042693. I was fishing a bass tournament this weekend and after running across the lake my partner said theres an oil slick on the water behind the boat … once we got back to the ramp I pulled the cowling and the entire engine was covered in oil. Appears it was coming from reservoir cap on the engine. Tested the float and it works but that’s as far as I’ve got. Wondering if it’s the cap seal. The cap was on tight. Any words of wisdom would help allot.

Make sure the cap isn't cracked, and that the black w/blue stripe hose (oil line) coming from the remote oil tank isn't disconnected/broken/cut, etc.

What Don and Joe said above...... Almost can't see where they crack on the top edge. And do yourself a favor (more mess) and relieve the pressure in the oil system before removing the cap. I like to remove the oil line at the tank and let the pressure out. Hardest part is cleaning the oil mess from the whole front of the engine. And I'll add, get a OEM (Mercury) cap from Rhonda.

Found a crack in the lid and got a new one on order. Thanks for the advice! Hope to be back on the water soon.
