If you put it in a protector, you pretty much lose the utility of the device. I use mine to make quick changes in speed, set the anchor lock when I'm not on the trolling motor (like if I'm sitting down tying a knot or grabbing a drink or what not). I use it to point and set a heading or make adjustments to a heading. What's the purpose of a protector anyways. The thing is waterproof.
