Something to check if you have a Hotfoot

Yesterday during a tournament we were making a short run to another spot. Winds were 15-25mph with gusts of 40mph. I was running g about 55mph when what felt like the engine stumbled and then dropped to 40mph. Initially I thought that maybe I had lost a cylinder. I shut it down and realized my throttle cable had popped out of the C clamp holder on tbe pedal. Two screws hold it on. The cable wasn't able to get full range so it is what was limiting the speed.

I slid pedal out of the slider holder and then reattached C clamp. All was well after that.

Just wanted to say it might be worth checking those screws. I've never had it happen before and could have been bad had we been out in the rough stuff. I'm gonna start carrying g a stubby screw driver as tge only way to get to those screws without one is to pull the pedal out.

Also check for wear on the return spring, my spring broke while loading my boat and it went over the bow roller and into the tailgate of my truck.

Thanks. I'll be giving mine a thorough inspection for sure. It just happens to be one of those items I kinda take for granted.

Use some blue locktite or some rtv etc to keep the screws from unthreading when not desired.

I also have been with a buddy on Fork when the throttle cable got stuck causing boat to gain speed and only way to stop was to pull kill switch. Did it about 3 times. Realized needed to be lubed and maintained. This was on a 2023 boat too that lives in a shop.

My spring broke this winter as well. Luckily I was in the middle of the lake.

It's a Yamaha and it's not the trunion piece. The cable did not detach from pedal. The C clamp that holds the cable to frame of pedal popped loose abd was prevent full range of cable movement.

Great Advice have heard first hand accounts of real bad situations developing from problems with the Hot Foot.

Never even thought to check mine. Probably should. It’s one of those things that not a problem until suddenly it is!

Same here. I check my spring regularly but never thought about that clamp.

I had the bolt that is used as the stop for the spring back out. It wasn’t allowing the hot foot to return to idle. Only way to stop was to pull kill switch. It was another important reminder of why that kill switch is so important.

Thanks for sharing Mark and yes as we all know anything mechanical is subject to failure. Hopefully that won't happen to either of my boats but if I find them loose I will either put red loctite on them or remove both and put machine screws in there with a locking nut on them.
