    USA 2018 ETEC G2-C150PLHAAD -- Spark plugs

I typically change the plugs and fuel filter / water separator every other season. Is that too often, or good practice? The price of the plugs just keeps going up and up...

The fuel filter is always a good practice. The spark plugs are stated for maintenance every 500 hours. So IMHO You change them when required.

Around that time some of the plugs had issues with the pads coming off. New ones have an 'A' suffix now.

G2 plugs are self indexing no need for 8 the A suffix on the plug has the improved pad on the electrode.
