What update was on the SD card? I leave my AC card (the one created as the AC card) in the console unit all the time. If its an update to my map subscription then no. You shouldn't have to leave it in the unit.

I take the update SD card out and keep it in a sealed box in the boat.
Note: I'm only using AC for updates.

Only because I just did this process, this is per the Garmin instructions for an Echomap unit.
The ActiveCaptain card should remain in the unit to use the ActiveCaptain app.
If you keep it in you can do screen shots, etc.
