The city here came around and installed a yellow lid on my cans at the office. Businesses get issued two from the city when you start. People were stealing them from businesses around town. Now if they see the yellow lid at a house they know it's stolen.

When I was building my house I had all the building supplies out for the taking. Plywood, 2x12's, 2x10's, t&g 2x6's etc...... The only thing that was stolen was a biga$$ geode that was unearthed when they dug the basement.

This post reminded me... last year, a wheel was off one of our garbage cans after garbage day pickup. I called the garbage co. and they said "Leave the can out at the road and we'll have someone come fix it".
Several days go by, and I finally come home to this "repair":

The wheel made about a 90 degree rotation before the wire loom "clip" fell off. Obviously, the repairman didn't torque the clip to the proper specs.
Called and texted that pic to them... their embarrassment was palpable over the phone.

Moral: The drivers aren't very dainty with the grappling arm, and do some serious damage whipping the empty cans around. Ours have been flung into the ditch dozens of times.

So I found out by my neighbor that the trash company dropped both our cans in the truck. They weren’t going to replace them until we called
