When I was seven years old, I would go fishing with my grandfather who loved to troll for pike and muskie and my pole was a 12ft cane pole with a matching length of black Dacron fishing line and the business end was tied with an OG Rapala Original F18 7" Floating Minnow and I would troll with the lure until I got a hit and then simply let the cane pole go and eventually the buoyancy of the cane pole would force the fish close enough to the surface to allow my grandfather to grab the cane pole and we would fight the fish until it either gave up or we simply let go of the cane pole and repeated the process again as many times as needed.
I still have fond memories of cane pole trolling with my grandfather and it was perhaps the simplest fishing setup I ever used: a 12ft cane pole, a matching length of Dacron fishing line, and either an F18 Rapala or a 1oz yellow and red five of diamonds spoon. We sometimes forget that the simplest solutions are still fun and enjoyable.
