    Why 10lbs braid?

I have noticed a lot of people now using 10 lbs braid with their spinning gear and curious why. Most using hi-vis line so it can't be an issue with the fish seeing it.

10 pound gives you the option of adding a fluorocarbon leader up to 10 pound to match the braid but in most cases they are using 6 or 8 pound some even use 6 pound but the 10# braid gives you options

Example if you use a 6 pound braid it makes no sense to use an 8 pound fluorocarbon leader

Also with a fluorocarbon leader the color of line only effects your ability to see it

The smallest I ever use is 16lb or 20lb YGK Soul. I use 20lb. Daiwa Samurai some also. The difference between 20lb and 10lb is so insignificant to me I do not want to use the lighter test line. I personally don't the true benefit of 8 or 10lb. test braid opposed to what I use. And it really only matters to me what is between my ears anyway......

I use 10 lb. Seaguar Smackdown. Mainly for finesse fishing. It casts really well and as far as the visibility issue, I have a fluoro leader. Also it is very sensitive as far as bite detection.

Why do you use 20lb floro in some situations and 12 in another. Same logic.

I've used YGK, Varivas and Daiwa Samurai among other premium brands. I've used up to 22 lb/2.0PE for light applications. I may be misunderstanding something but I just dropped my line from 2.0 PE to 1.5 because the breaking strength was increasing as the line becomes thinner.

haha, I use 8lb braid and a 6lb leader. The lakes up here are clear, and the casting distance is amazing

I've downsized to 8lb braid and flouro leader the past 2 seasons. Strong and hasn't broken yet.

For the finesse stuff I'm sold on trying 10lb braid and 6 lb flouro. My kid isn't moving off 15/20 Seaguar smackdown.

I keep telling him I need my first smallmouth over 6 (PB is 5 3/4) this year. He caught a new PB , 6 3/4 last spring and he hasn't stopped chirping since. I've told him hell or high water I'm joining him and his brother (6.60) in the 6 club.

Compared to fluoro you feel the bite better plus no stretch for a better hook set (of course there is some stretch in the leader). 10-12 lb. test covers a lot of scenarios.

I like 14lb fireline on spinning personally, about 5lb mono dia.

10lb regular braid is like 2-4lb mono dia, and casts a long way on a properly setup rod/reel.

10lbs braid to 8lbs fluoro leader is the ticket for me. Very strong and ties quickly with a uni to uni.

I use 10# braid with usually 8# flouro leader on the medium and medium-lite spinning and 15# braid with 10 or 12# flouro leader on the medium-heavies. Seems to work fine for me.

    To actually answer the question.

There are two reasons to use 10lb braid vs 15 or 20 and neither is visibility.

The two are casting distance in clear water. can be important to get away from the boat. As you mentioned many use high vis colours but if you use an fg knot with a long enough leader you can offset that concern.

The other is drag or water resistance, especially in current. The thinner line will have less bow, therefore better presentation, better feel and better hooksets in wind or current.
