Lithium battery low temp cut off question?

Many of the cheaper batteries have it now. What exactly does it mean. Charging or using the battery in the cold?

If the battery has low temp cut off, does that mean if it's 25° outside all night will the battery not work when dropping the trolling motor while below freezing?

    Thanks.

Battery will not charge below 32 degree but most will operate to a much lower temp

Our units will operate to -4 degrees

Also, our All Purpose line has internal heaters so you can charge below 32

I suppose you have to warm them up in some way to get them to charge?

if the battery does not have an internal heater and is below 32 degrees you will need to warm it prior to charging

Using them would do that. CJ

Can someone give us layman's definition of what Low temperature cutoff actually does and why it needs to?

charging Below 32 degrees will cause lithium plating (damage) to the cells, like a switch the BMS turns shut off to protect the battery

Thanks, this does not affect using the batteries at a colder temperature, just charging?

Correct, just charging. I have lithiums without internal heating for my TM. Have not yet been in a charging situation where I need to heat them/keep them warm in order to charge but i've heard you could wrap the batteries in a heating pad or keep a corded light in the closed bilge to keep it warm enough/above 32 F...

This is correct, our units will operate normally to -4 degrees F

It's been cold enough twice this winter that mine wouldn't charge. I put a heat lamp above the bilge area and warmed them so they would charge.

Ive got a little fan/heater I’ve used for mine a time or two if I’m charging the night before. Open compartment and channel the air down in there. Works fine. Also used that heater on my lower unit during latest cold snap.
