Yea very sad.
We’ve focused on USA made steel, not just US brand, for decades and we hope this doesn’t change the quality of that legacy brand.
Will have to keep a lookout this spring for the Hinomaru Rising Sun flag flying over the US Steel Gary works on the southern shores of Lake Michigan while coho spring fishing this season.
Maybe they will paint a flag on the light house at the harbor entrance.
Look up the Gary works contribution during the war with Japan.
Sad.
Very sad. Ok to buy Japanese owned Honda and Toyota though.
What a shame. The company I retired from bought large rolls of galvanized metal. Always used U.S., it was better a product. U. S. galvanized steel didn't rust. Foreign always did.

UAW has stated its opposition to this; they wanted Cleveland Cliffs to make the purchase. UAW will be pushing hard on regulators to find a reason to block the sale.
Shareholders and execs who get their huge equity payouts probably think this is a great thing. Probably important to keep in mind who we are rooting for, the actual owners (shareholders), the workers or the consumer. From what I read the workers will be fine and the consumer including U.S. auto manufacturers might benefit from any shared advanced technology.
Time will tell.
Be interesting to see how this dries up U.S. sourced materials. Gonna be a point where the doe and dod have to relax us sourced material requirements.
Better than China I guess

Probably because a Toyota and Honda vehicle utilizes more American parts and labor than any of the Big 3 vehicles per capita according to the American Car Index report that gets published every year.
in other words, an American brand outsources more parts and labor while “foreign” brand utilizes more american workforce and parts. Key word is per capita (weighted average of American parts and labor per vehicle produced). Ford has a larger workforce but still outsources a lot more materials for an F150 than say what goes into a Honda Accord

They will still employ american workers right? So it will be just like the car companies.
The new America! Get accustomed to it!
The price for Nippon steel was double of what Cleveland Cliffs offered.
