Minn Kota Ultrex 24V wiring help

My trolling motor is not getting any power thru the plug. I put new plug and checked batteries they are good. I hard wired trolling motor straight to batteries and it works. So not sure if it's the receptacle, or the breaker!
I checked voltage on wires in back of receptacle and it's fine but I'm unable to test receptacle from front where plug goes in.

I also noticed one of the breakers keeps tripping.

I have 24V trolling motor with red, orange and black wires running thru breaker and all 3 wires run to receptacle.

    Back story:
Steering died on trolling motor out of a sudden on 4th if July 😞 both on pedal and remote as well. While TM still had power and throttle worked fine. I was told I need a new circuit board and steering sensor. Authorized repair center tested steering housing and they said it’s fine and no need to replace.

I ended up buying and installing new foot pedal assembly which already came with everything. But I’m not getting power thru plug on neither old foot pedal nor new. Although both when hard wires to batteries came to life.

    Minn Kota Ultrex 80lbs 24V
    2 * 12V batteries
Plug: Marinco 4-Wire 12/24V Trolling Motor Plug, Black Part # 2018BP-24
Receptacle: Marinco 12/24V Trolling Motor Receptacle Part #: 2018BR
Breaker: Unknown to me brand - 2 battery 50A push to reset
Boat: new to me 2000 Nitro 929CDX

    • Any idea if it’s receptacle, wires, breaker? Or am I missing something else?

    - Should I change this stupid 3 wire setup or can I just leave it alone for now?

There is no need to keep the orange wire connected because it is not being used. You have a breaker tripping. Key problem. Is it the 12 volt or 24 volt breaker. I bet it s the 24 volt. You either have a bad breaker or a bad battery. Get the batteries load tested. My guess is you have a bat breaker. You need to also change that 50 amp breaker to a 60 amp. Don't try to find exact replacement. they probably don't make that anymore. Also you could have a short in the 24 volt part of the receptacle.

First, get rid of that 50a breaker and install a 60a.

Second, tape the orange wire ends and set them out of the way. DO NOT connect them to ANYTHING !!

Next, run the RED wire to the post on Battery 1 to the Batt side of the Breaker

Next, run a wire from the LOAD side of the Breaker to the TM Cut Off Switch (If you have one)

Attach the RED wire from the bow to the other side of the Cut Of Switch

Connect the RED wire at the bow to one of the pins on the bow plug. (Female)

Now connect the NEG of Battery 1 to the POS of Battery 2 using any short wire of the same size as the RED or BLACK wire.

Then connect the BLACK wire from the Bow to the NEG side of Battery 2 and any other of the pins on the plug at the Bow.

Use a VOLT/OHM Meter to test for 24v across the BLACK and RED wires at the bow plug.

Lastly, connect the corresponding wires to the TM Plug, (Male), that you connected to the Bow Plug.

    Thank you Bradrodfish & Wmitch2

I know plug is good, batteries are good, and TM is good.

I’ll change breaker and receptacle and see what happens. If that doesn’t work only thing left are the wires

I couldn’t test the voltage at receptacle but I tested wires at bow behind receptacle and was reading a bit above 24V. So I’m assuming they are okay for now. But not sure if they are 6 AWG wires though, which is the recommended wire gauge for my 21ft Nitro.

If I need to run new wires, terminals, rings and all of that, any recommendations on reasonably priced marine grade wires and what approximate length should I buy to run from batteries to bow. 30ft one way? 40ft, 50ft?

Also fun fact, I found out the orange wire is the live wire to my trolling motor the red one is useless.

I don’t have separate switch for TM batteries. I just ordered this breaker from Amazon. My understanding that it functions as both breaker and switch.

I would not use that breaker, the cheap copies will usually let you down, Bussman or Blue seas 285 or 187 series is the ones I prefer.
If you do use it, get a second one for a spare and keep it in the boat!
    Thank You Leon Pugh
